SERIAL CONVERTER INTERFACE

The SMAR ICS Serial Converter Interface is a modular


system which converts the EIA-232-D to EIA-422-A or
EIA-485 standard interfaces. With up to two completely
independent communication channels, the ICS is ideal
for local or field applications, in system integration that
requires:

• High baud-rates.
• Long distances between equipments.
• High EMI immunity.
• Ground decoupling.
• High AC line voltage variations.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

9 Serial signal conversion between 232 and 422/485.


9 Modular system:
• 1 - Power supply module;
• 2 - 232 ⇔ 422/485 Interface modules;
• 1 - Passive back plane.

9 Independent bus standard (422 or 485) selection for the


two serial channels.
9 Selection of 422/485 driver enable mode independent for
the two serial channels:
- Automatic
- Manual.
9 Half or full-duplex communication with 485.
9 Half-duplex communication with 422.
9 Baud-rates up to 500 kbps.
9 Optical/galvanic isolation between 232 and 422/485.
9 Selectable multiplex between the two channels signals.
9 Universal input voltage (90 to 240 Vac [48 to 440 Hz]
or DC).

APPLICATIONS

PC -> SMAR CD600 CONTROLLER COMMUNICATION DCS -> FIELD EQUIPMENT COMMUNICATION

The ICS version 2.0-1, configured to 485, allows the


communication of a PC with up to 58 CD600 controllers (29
per channel).

In the supervisory systems which use 422 or 485 to


communicate with field devices, the ICS can be used to
integrate them to equipments that only have the 232 interface
(PLCs, Acquisition Systems, Terminals, etc).
PC NETWORK

With the ICS configured to 485, it’s possible to implement a


wide communication network between PCs (over 1200m,
without repeaters), operating with medium velocity (up to
115200 bps).
