TOPIC: INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND IMPLICATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL
DIFFERENCES
REFLECTION:
The topic individual differences stands for those differences which in their totality
distinguish one individual from the other. We can say that individual differences is the
differences among humans that distinguish or separate them from one another and
makes one as a single unique individual.
It was discussed that individual differences has two major factors which is
Heredity and Environment. Heredity as we all know is the passing on of physical
or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another (Oxford
dictionary). Some factors that we inherit from our parents include intelligence, hair
color, eyes, body built and even diseases. The other factor which is environment is
defined as the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded.
Church, police station, school, market, malls etc. can be a part of one’s environment.
All of the above mentioned factors contribute to the total well-being of an
individual and made him different from other people. Although a person is born
possessing characteristics inherited from his parents, he still is different from his
parents. Even twins have different physical features and characteristics from one
another.
On the basis of differences in personality, according to Jung, people are
classified into three groups namely: introverts, extroverts and ambiverts. But then,
whatever personality a person possesses upon birth will eventually change because of
his environment. This was proven upon the testimonies of the teachers in the class that
their personality and character changed with the influence of their environment.
As people grow, more and more individual differences can be observed in them
such as tallness, stature, fatness, and thickness, skin complexion and including
intelligence level which can be classified as they enter school age. At this stage, the
differences in attitudes and hobbies can also be observed which mostly contribute to
their achievement in life.
Intelligence is a big plus factor that a person can inherit from his parents. I say it
as a big plus factor because not all married couple are gifted enough with high
intelligence quotient. In one of my readings during my college days, a researcher stated
that women are more likely to transmit intelligence genes to their children because they
are carried on the X chromosome and women have two of these while men only have
one. ( Charlotte England) In this aspect, some men may think to choose a partner
using his head over his emotions in order to produce intelligent children.
Differences in economic status influences child’s interest, character and outlook
in life. Children who were raised by economically stable families can choose their
education, decide their future business and more likely to build an equally prominent
family as their parents were. And it is also very obvious and a sad truth that in the world
we are living, economic status is the measurement of how much respect you will get
from the society.
Emotional differences can be seen in person on how he holds himself in a
particular situation. Some people become aggressive and they get angry easily. There
are others who stay calm and peaceful. In a workplace, employee’s emotions influence

decision making, commitment, work quality and performance. Upon hiring, some
companies conduct emotional intelligence of a person to ensure that they will hire
emotional stable employees.
A person can also be different from the other because of his nationality. Each
race has a different distinguishing features and characteristics from others.
But then, whatever characteristic or personality we may have, let us love and
cherish it. We may not be satisfied in some of our physical features but let us remember
that the key to contentment is to accept your weaknesses and love it because it is you.
No one will value it but you alone. We may be born possessing bad attitude, but, if we
think it will bring us regret there is always room for change. Observe yourself and your
actions and be sensitive in what you do.
