1 : Family Engagement

4.6.1 - Describe the advantages and importance of family or caregiver involvement in

learner development

It states, 38% of parents lack to provide educational help to their children with school

work (evidence 1.2.1). Engaging families outside of the classroom is a crucial part when trying

to fully understand all students and create a healthy, strong relationship.

Direct phone calls, personal emails, survey questions are some of the few ways teachers

implement to create family engagement. Through research it was found weekly newsletters are

the most used form of communication. I created a sample newsletter for a kindergarten class, in

which I highlighted daily activities, students of the week and important announcements to

parents (evidence 2.1.2). Another popular form of communication by teachers is a student led

parent teacher conference. I created an outline of a student led conference and a series of sample

letters and reflections to completely draw attention to important areas of improvement. This

assignment gives opportunity for students to practice formal presentation and self reflection

skills (evidence 2.1.3).

Technology plays a integral role in making communication easier for both the teacher and

the student's family. For instance, email is a beneficial platform where teachers can personally

write updates regarding their class for students to easily access. After interviewing one of my

mentor teachers on how she engages with her families, I learned that email is a crucial part of

kicking off first impressions and keeping up with proper communication (evidence 2.1.4).

There is no evident downside to encouraging family engagement. Parents or guardians,

students, and educators are all benefited from annual communication. If parents know what is
going on in the classrooms, they are more likely to assist in helping their student’s learning at

home. There are many forms of communication and one might be better than the other depending

on grade level and circumstances but a perfect recipe for a healthy relationship between teachers

and families consist of being consistent, patient and open.
