Senior Project Reflection on Marketing

Kendra Rowe reflected on her senior project where she created a marketing plan for a hypothetical business. Due to COVID, she was unable to shadow professionals and instead conducted extensive online research. She spent several days creating a presentation and ensuring her marketing brand and advertisement were developed. While initially stressed about the shadowing aspect, she felt her online research provided valuable insights. The project helped her gain confidence in her chosen field of marketing and management, which she will study in college.

Reflection

For my senior project, I spent most of my time doing research and putting together

my presentation. Because I wasn’t able to shadow anywhere due to covid, many of my

hours were spent searching through the internet for answers to any questions I had. I

found that this was actually pretty simple, and I could rely on many different sources to

make sure that any information I was getting was as accurate as possible. My product as a

whole took me around 3 hours, except for the time it spent brainstorming ideas and

names. I can say that the time was split fairly evenly between creating the brand face and

the advertisement. The presentation definitely took up most of my time, I spent days

putting it together and changing or adding things to it in order to have something I felt

happy and accomplished by.

While working on this project, I encountered many problems. The main one would

definitely be trying to find a place that would allow me to shadow. I tried reaching out to a

few places in Watertown like Gather, Backroads, and Dempsey’s, but I was unfortunately

turned down due to concerns about the pandemic. This put a lot of stress on my

shoulders, and I was worried about how I could continue while still feeling stuck behind.

However, I decided that I might actually be able to benefit from this, as I knew that I could

find an abundance of blogs and websites online that could teach me everything I wanted

to know. Next, I had to figure out what I could do for my product. I wasn’t sure what
problem I could be solving in the marketing industry, so I decided to solve my own

problem: I definitely needed to learn more about what it’s actually like to step into this

field.

Managing my time for this project wasn’t too much of a challenge. Because I didn’t

have to squeeze in time to shadow, I didn’t have to worry about making sure my own

schedule would work with a mentor’s. I had time during my study hall in the morning to

make sure I was working on the project outside of class, as well as afternoons that I was

free from work.

I’m happy to say that this senior project has taught me a lot. Before working on this,

I had almost no idea what it was like working in marketing or management. But, now I

know exactly what it takes to start up a business, and all of the pointers on how to put your

brand into the world to be successful. Knowing all of this has made me much more

confident in preparing for the future, and I feel like I have an advantage that I would have

missed out on if it weren’t for this project.

Now that we’re getting ready to graduate, I can begin to use my new knowledge as I

go off to college. I’ve been accepted into the Marketing and Management program at Lake

Area Technical College, and I’m excited to work in this field in the near future. Last year it

felt like I was scrambling around, trying to find out what it was I wanted to do after high

school with no luck. I spent so much time searching for the perfect program at many

different colleges all around the midwest, and I’m glad that I now know I can start my

journey close to home.
