Advanced Process Control Tutorial

The document outlines a tutorial for HCHE 511 on Advanced Process Control, detailing control schemes for three different chemical processes. Each question requires the inclusion of specific control mechanisms for managing flow rates, temperatures, pressures, and levels in reactors and distillation systems. Diagrams are referenced for visual representation of the processes and control strategies.

Advanced Process Control

Question 1

A reactive distillation is being conducted in a stirred jacketed reactor as shown

on Figure 1. Include on the diagram a control scheme to achieve the following:

(a) Feed stream B on flow control based on a set point.

(b) Flow of stream A ratioed to flow rate of stream B.
(c) Reactor level by manipulating product valve.
(d) Reactor pressure control by manipulating condenser vapor release valve.
(e) Reactor temperature control by manipulating steam valve.
(f) High reactor pressure overrides the temperature control valve.

Question 2

The phthalic anhydride (PA) converter shown in Figure 2 has 𝑉2 𝑂5 catalyst

packed in tubes, with the tubes surrounded by a heat transfer salt (HTS) solution.
The HTS is in turn cooled by generating steam in boiler coils passing through the
shell-side of the converter. The PA in the stream leaving the reactor is condensed
and pumped away, whilst the remaining non-condensibles proceed to a catalytic
combustor. Show the following controls on the accompanying diagram:

(a) O-xylene is on flow control.

(b) Air flow rate is rationed to the o-xylene flow rate.
(c) BFW valve is used to control the maximum of the three temperatures
measured in the catalytic tubes.
(d) Condenser temperature control is cascaded to a flow rate controller on the
CW.
(e) Reaction pressure is controlled using the non-condensibles valve.
(f) Accumulator level is controlled using the Raw PA valve.
(g) A maximum temperature is allowed exit the reactor – if this exceeded, the
o-xylene valve is pinched shut.
(h) A maximum level is allowed in the accumulator – if this exceeded the CW
is pinched shut.

Question 3

A reactor is fed with vapour from a partial condenser. If there is insufficient

vapour, distillate collected in a surge tank can be re-vaporised, but this is more
expensive. Show a control scheme to achieve the following:

a) Reflux on flow control

b) Reflux flow rationed to column feed flow
c) Reflux drum level controlled using CW valve
d) High reflux drum level opens valve to surge tank
e) Insert additional controls for:
(i) Feed flow rate to reactor
(ii) Column pressure control
(iii) Vaporiser level
(iv) Vaporizer pressure
f) High column pressure overrides CW valve
