Rainfall Intensity and Erosion Analysis

The document discusses rainfall intensity, depth, duration and frequency. Some key points: - More intense rainfall occurs over smaller areas and has shorter duration, while less intense rainfall occurs over larger areas and has longer duration. - Intensity of rainfall is inversely proportional to its duration - more intense rainfall has shorter duration. - More intense rainfall events cause greater erosion due to higher rates of detachment and runoff. - The return period of an extreme rainfall event is directly proportional to its intensity - more intense events have longer return periods.

Board Notes Lecture # 3

Frequency: Will be discussed for only that

rainfall event that is of extreme nature.

I= Depth/Time=(mm/hr)

 “Barish kam ho rahi hy”= less intense=

Rain droplet size will be small
 “Barish bahut taiz ho rahi hy”= very
intense= Rain droplet will be large

 When rainfall occurs over a larger area, it

is less intense and has greater duration.
- Rainfall event with greater intensity
generally occurs over a smaller area and vice
versa.
 Intensity of rainfall is inversely
proportional to its duration.

 More intense rainfall event will cause

greater erosion.

For erosion: 1) Detach; 2) carried away by the

runoff

Frequency:
 Frequency will only be found for extreme
events (Generally)
--> More Intense the event is, greater will be
its return period

 Quetta 1935= 1000years (Return period)

 Kashmir 2005= 100 years
 Qiayamat= will occur only once
 Monsoon= 1 year
Capacity= how much water will it store?

60 years

 Historical rainfall data, flow data

(WAPDA, PMD);
 70 years; Analysis
 Extreme event RP
 9,000,000 ft3/sec, 25years; 47 ft
 20,000,000 ft3/sec, (100 years); 60 ft
Rainfall:
Intensity, Depth, Duration, Frequency

Given:
Duration= 20mins, 6hrs
T=50years
I=?

A= 1.43
B= 2.80
C= 2.75
D= 5.70

x= 32.1
y=-24, 49.9

Put A, B, C, D, x=32.1, y=-24 in Eq. 2.2

I20= 1.87 in

Put A, B, C, D, x=32.1, y=49.9

I6= 3.84 in

Intensity20= depth/time=1.87/0.33= 5.667

in/hr
Intensity6= depth/time=3.84/6=0.64in/hr

1in=25.4mm
