acceptance.
Needless to say, it does not mean being arrogant, conceited or thinking that
you are better than anyone else. It means having a healthy regard for yourself
knowing that you are a worthy human being.
It is important to remind ourselves that no one is perfect.
Formative Assessment:
We all have strengths and weaknesses and we certainly possess the resources Day 4 – Canvas Quiz
to work on improving ourselves.
Each of us is unique and has specific talents and abilities to offer. We are all
here, in the words of Walt Whitman, "to contribute a verse".
In order to appreciate yourself it is up to you to discover what makes you
unique and to further develop those talents. We have a responsibility to ourselves to
do so.
You cannot sit around and wait for approval from others. Work on accepting
yourself. You are the only "you" that you have. It is in your best interests to be the best
you can be.
Until you love yourself, you will not be able to love anyone else. You can only
love another to the degree that you do yourself.
How do you love yourself?
You do so by investing in and working on your personal growth and
development. You work on being the best you.
You understand that you are human, but you acknowledge that you have the
potential and spiritual capability to rise above whatever conditions and obstacles are
put in your path.
When you love yourself you endeavor to take care of yourself physically,
mentally and emotionally. You take care to look and feel your best by nurturing your
body, mind and spirit.
Conversely, if you don't love yourself enough, start taking care of your body,
mind, and spirit. You will not only become more self-aware, you will generate feelings
of worth and accomplishment.
Your Body
You take care of your body by eating well, exercising and getting plenty of
rest. There are many wonderful books available that can help you learn what types of
food and exercise are good for you and your particular body type.
Your Mind
Your mind needs nourishment and exercise too. Don't take it for granted.
Stimulate it by learning about new and interesting things.
Keeping your mind active helps prevent certain old age diseases such as
Alzheimer's and dementia.
Keeping the neural connections of your mind active helps maintain memory
and brain functions at optimum levels.
Your Spirit
If you take care of your mind and body but neglect your spirit, you will lack
balance and feel that something is missing in your life. Taking care of your spirit
rejuvenates you, and helps you deal with the daily stresses and challenges of everyday
life.
When you love yourself, you invest in your personal growth and
development. You endeavor to be the best that you can be, and you strive to achieve
your potential.
"Loving oneself is the starting point of the growth of the person who feels the
courage to take responsibility for their own existence." Viktor Frankl

DAY 4
Formative Assessment (Canvas Quiz)
DAY 5
Lesson 2: Self-acceptance Vs. Bullying
What Is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a
real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to
be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have
serious, lasting problems.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength,
access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power
imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the
same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to
happen more than once.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking
someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
What Is Self-Acceptance?
Loving yourself as you are.
Accepting your habits, skills and how you look.
Accepting your situation and circumstances and stop hating them or getting
angry at them.
Having compassion for yourself.
Being less judgmental about yourself.
Self-acceptance means knowing that no one is perfect and accepting any
failings you might have.
Stop dwelling on past mistakes.
Embracing who you are.
Accepting your behavior and weaknesses, and doing nothing to improve, is not the
right kind of self acceptance. It does not contribute to real progress and improvement.
This term seems not to be well explained and well understood. Accepting yourself as
you are is only the first step. It helps you realize your good, and not so good qualities,
and can alleviate feelings of guilt, lack of self esteem or unhappiness.
Self-acceptance does not mean that you accept what you are and do nothing to change
and improve. It does not mean accepting your fate and life as it is.
Becoming aware and acknowledging your behavior, habits and your personality, and
not being afraid to look at yourself as you are, is an important step toward it.
When you accept yourself as you are, you put yourself in a better position to begin
improving yourself. You understand your good and bad characteristics and and realize
where you need to improve.
Do not say to yourself, “This is what I am. I accept myself as I am. I accept my
character, my failings and my fate, and this how it is. I can do nothing about it and I
cannot improve myself or my fate.”
Knowing yourself affords you the possibility to see what you can do to improve
yourself and your life. Self-acceptance means that you see your failings, accept and
acknowledge your present position, and then look for ways to improve.
Improvement requires that you understand and acknowledge your character and
habits, stop comparing yourself and your achievements to others, and acknowledging
your skills or the lack of them. This will bring some sort of inner peace, lightness and
happiness, like getting rid of a burden.
Remember, acknowledging your good and bad habits and traits of character can
alleviate feelings of dissatisfaction, anger, resentment or unhappiness, but it is not an
excuse for staying as you are, it is only the first step on the road to improvement and
empowerment.
Start striving to accept yourself, so you can take the next step, to improve yourself and
your life.
Simple Self Acceptance Techniques
Are there any techniques or guidelines? Here are few steps:
Try to pay attention to your thoughts. What kind of thoughts are you thinking.
This can help you learn one or two things about yourself and your attitude
toward yourself.
Watch you behavior and actions in the various situations of everyday life. Do
you tend to accept yourself and your life, or are you angry and unsatisfied
with yourself?
Practice positive thinking
Adopt positive self talk, instead of negative self talk.
Repeat Positive affirmations.
Learn to accept what cannot be changed.
Strive to let go of the past and dwelling on painful memories.
DISCUSSION BOARD: Based on what we’ve discussed about self-acceptance and
bullying, how do you think self-acceptance can defeat bullying?
