EC-232 Electromagnetics Tutorial 2

This document contains 7 problems related to electromagnetics. The problems cover topics like: 1) Finding the electric flux density given point and surface charges. 2) Calculating displacement current in a parallel plate capacitor. 3) Finding the magnetic field intensity and direction given electric field, permeability and permittivity. 4) Calculating power, electric field and energy density from a given electric field. 5) Finding electric displacement, electric field, polarization and energy density between dielectric regions. 6) Determining the magnetic field in a region of free space and magnetic material. 7) Solving for magnetic and electric fields across a dielectric interface with a given current sheet.

ECN-232 (Engineering Electromagnetics) Tutorial-2
Spring-2021 Dated:03/04/21

1) A point charge of 30 nC is located at the origin, while plane y=3 carries a

charge of 10 nC/m2. Find D at (0,4,3). Where D is the electric flux density.

2) A parallel-plate capacitor with plate area of 5cm2 and plate separation of 3mm
has a voltage 50 Sin103t V applied to its plates. Calculate the displacement
current assuming ε=2ε0.

3) In a medium characterized by σ = 0, μ = μ0, ε=4ε0 and E=20 Sin (108t - βz) ay

V/m. Find the magnetic field intensity H and its direction.

4) Given that E1=10ax - 6ay + 12az V/m, find (a) P1, (b) E2 and the angle makes
with the y-axis, (c) the energy density in each region.

5) Two homogenous dielectric regions 1 (ρ≤4 cm) and 2 (ρ≥4 cm) have dielectric
constant 3.5 and 1.5, respectively. If D2=12aρ - 6 a∅ +9az nC/m2 , calculate (a)
E1 and D1 ,(b) P2 and ρpv2 , (c) the energy density in each region.

6) Region I, described by 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 ≥10, is free space, whereas region II described

by 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 ≤10 magnetic material for which 𝜇 = 10𝜇0 . Assuming that the
boundary between the material and free space is current free, find B2 if B1=0.1ax
+ 4ay + 0.2az Wb/m2.

7) A current sheet 𝐽⃗ = 10 𝑎𝑦 A/m lies on the dielectric interface x=0 between two
dielectric media with 𝜀𝑟1 = 5, µ𝑟1 = 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜀𝑟2 = 2, µ𝑟2 = 2 in region 1 (x <
⃗⃗1 =
0) and region (x > 0) region 2. If the magnetic field in region 1 at x = 0 is 𝐻
3 𝑎𝑥 + 30 𝑎𝑦 A/m and 𝐸⃗⃗1 = 4 𝑎𝑥 + 10 𝑎𝑦 V/m then determine the magnetic
and electric field in region 2 (x > 0) at x=0.
