(a) If you are a CIO (Chief Information Officer) of any business organization, briefly
describe your roles.
In today’s world no one cannot lead the life without Information System. It became mandatory
part for our lives. It is used for education., health, banking, many business organizations and so
on. Information System is consisting of a set of interrelated components. It is an organized system
for collection, organization, storage and communication of information. IS has become an integral
part of the business organization. Actually, in today’s world of business, there are requirements
for IS in all departments like accounting, marketing, management, HRM, supply chain
management, finance etc. Information systems help many businesses improve the efficiency and
effectiveness of their business process, managerial decision making and workgroup collaboration
to strengthen the competitive position in rapidly changing marketplace. The organizations are
constantly striving to achieve integration of their systems to allow information to flow freely
through them, which adds even greater flexibility and business support than any of the individual
system roles could provide.
Role of Information System:
Today’s business organization cannot run without IS. It helps the organization to take right
decision and form the strategy. It is very necessary in managing production data and helps to earn
maximize production. The major uses of information systems for the operations, management and
competitive advantage of a business. There are three fundamental roles of IS in business which are
given below:
Support business process and operation:
Information System helps to eradicate the difficulties in operational level in business. There are 3
level of the organization. The operational level is one of them. In operational level, employees
work according the strategy which is planned by top level. The middle level ordered the operational
workers to do the work. In operational level, employees generally record customer purchase, keep
track off inventory, pay employees, buy new equipment and products, evaluate sales trends. Few
years ago, they did these things by their hand and it wasted times. But now-a-days they can do
these works easily and quickly by IS. All the systems are computer based and its easy to collect
data from other resources.
Support decision making by employees and managers:
Information System also helps to make decisions for maximizing the profit in the organizations.
Top level of the business organization makes the decision and form the strategy. Although every
level has to make decision in the basis of their circumstances. It supports the decision about what
merchandize to be added or discontinued, or what investments they require and all these decisions
are made after the data analysis by IS. It’s easier to analysis previous and present data and easy to
make decisions by managers.
Support strategies for competitive advantages:
Competitive advantage is external factor of the organization. It is a long-term plan and helps to
gain advantages against the competitors in the market. Information system helps to gather the
information about competitors and market. For example, a decision to install self-check-out kiosks
or opening ecommerce website for online shopping This offering might be attractive for customer
which is lucrative for the organization. Customers can easily review the products and compare
with other products. So, it also supports the strategies for competitive advantages.
The Chief Information Officer Role:
CIO is a highly technical person who looks after the information technology departments resources
and staffs. I work in the organization as a role of the Chief Information Officer. I have to report to
CEO of our company. I have to oversees the IS departments along with managerial role. I am
responsible for strategic management and operational activities. My role is similar to IS role. They
are:
Support business process and operation:
I support the other departments like finance, HR, management, marketing, etc. by collecting and
gathering the information. I record all the data which is important for the organization. I use the
computer-based information system to record employee’s data, competitor’s data, products data,
equipment data and sometimes I evaluates sales trends by past recording data. I communicate with
all the departments and exchanging information about customers and managers. I make easy to
connect the situation for all the departments. I have to ensured by using all technical opportunities
to do the operational activities rapidly and easily.
Support decision making by employees and managers:
When I perform the leading role as a leader, I am responsible for HR activities like supervising,
hiring, training and motivating the employees. I support to make decision for the top executives.
Sometimes I identify the needs and develop solutions which helps to change the organization
situation. I have to take decisions how to allocate the employees, financial and information
resources. Information resource allocation is the most important role for me. If I allocate wrongly
the information, the whole business situation might be getting worst. Even when the matter comes
about investment or purchasing the machine, I give the information about the capabilities through
finance departments. I can’t decide the long-term planning process but helps them to decide what
to do. I also help to take decision of some investigation.
Support strategies for competitive advantages:
I have to oversee the external environment to maintain with technical changes and competition. I
monitor the market situation by allocating the information. I keep many sources like vendors
contacts, customer information, professional relationships and high network people contacts. I can
gather the information about competitor’s information. I help the organization keep in touch with
customers and suppliers directly. I take a decision to install self-check out kiosks. Even I help to
maintain relation between the customers and organization by using social network and through
website. I design the website to attract the customers and try to understand their trouble with our
products. I support marketing departments for creating advertising and allocating the competitors
information.
Actually, my role as Chief Information Officer is so similar to IS role. My role is so important for
all departments of the organization. The technology is getting advanced day by day and we have
to be careful for every situation. That’s why this role gets importance for business in the world.
(b) Describe your responsibilities as a Database administrator.
Given the position for database administrator and I would discuss the role of database
administrator. A database is a collection of data elements. And a database administrator is a person
who is responsible for managing all activities which is included database. The data stored in a
database are independent of the application programmer using them.

The role of database administrator:
Today’s organization cannot analysis without data. Every industry and business have big data
which has to be managed. There are very low chances that one person can manage the whole
database system. There is need to be a great team to manage it. I have roles and responsibilities
which are given below:
In charge of enterprise database development:
Enterprises and large organization manage their huge data collection by enterprise database. This
database handle multiple queries of users. A database administrator has to oversee the whole
process and manage the situation. I have control over the huge collection of data.
Improves the integrity and security of organizational database:
Integrity refers to protect from any unauthorized access, alteration or deletion. When the company
has vast data collection, its not easy to control any unauthorized access. But I have the skill to
secure the data and they protect the company from any hacking. We improve the security system.
Uses Data Definition Language (DDL) to develop and specify data contents:
We use DDL in database management system to develop and specify data content, relationship,
structure of each database and to modify the data specification when necessary. We can make
changes the data elements.
Stores these specifications in a data dictionary or a metadata respository:
Sometimes information is catalogued and store in a database of data definitions and specifications
called a data dictionary or meta data respository. We can query data dictionaries to report the status
of any aspect of a firms meta data. The whole system is managed by us.
My role as database administrator helps the organization to mange the huge data collection and
database management. IS departments support to do the role.
