GUIDELINE FOR ABSTRACT WRITING

An abstract is an important part of any academic/ professional paper /manual/folder. This briefs overview
serves as a summary of what your paper/manual contains, so it should succinctly and accurately represent
what your paper/manual is about and what the reader can expect to find.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT LAB TRAINER

Page 7
DUET, KARACHI ENGR. MIR MUHAMMAD BOZDAR
Fortunately, by following a few simple guidelines, you can create an abstract that generates interest in
your work and help readers quickly learn if the paper/manual will be of interest to them.

The purpose of your abstract is to provide a brief yet thorough overview of your paper/manual. your
abstract should function much like your title page ,it should allow the person reading it too quickly
determine what your paper/manual is all about.
Your abstract is the first thing that most people will read, and it is usually what informs their decision to
read the rest of your paper. A good abstract lets the reader know that your paper is worth reading.
According to the official guidelines, a good abstract should be:

1. Brief but packed with information. Each sentence must be written with maximum impact in
mind. To keep your abstract short, focus on including just four or five of the essential points,
concepts, or findings.
2. Objective and accurate. The abstract's purpose is to report rather than provide commentary. It
should also accurately reflect what your paper is about. Only include information that is also
included in the body of your paper.

GUIDELINE FOR INTRODUCTION

Introduction is an important part of any paper/article/manual etc. it can reflects the overview of basics of
your article, major aspects, its history and your future goal.

When you Introduction of your article you should remember in your mind each paragraph must have only
one topic major aspects to be discussed with proper grammar and punctuation

GUIDELINE FOR EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

Experimental procedure should cover all the steps which would be done during performance of
experiments.

Each step must write in a single line. Each line may contain number of sentences

GUIDELINE FOR RESULTS

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT LAB TRAINER
Page 8
DUET, KARACHI ENGR. MIR MUHAMMAD BOZDAR
Each experimental data can be used for further calculation and plotting of graph.
Do calculation neat and clean with proper accurate formula with its reference.
Graph should be plot on graph paper, rough sketch not acceptable
Units must be written, all calculation must be unit consistent
Any schematic diagram if required to be sketch, it should be clean and draw with pencil, don’t used
marker, ballpoint for schematic diagram and graph

DISCUSSION
It should cover overall experiments and its outcomes, limitation and errors, comparison of data

GUIDELINE FOR PERFORMANCE

1. Student should use proper PPEs (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTS) i.e. lab
coat, gloves, goggles etc.
2. Sandal, slippers not allowed during lab performance
3. Mobile phones strictly prohibited during lab performance
4. Do not used rubber shoes
5. Loss clothing not allowed during lab performance

SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS
The rules and regulations that follow are universal for the laboratories. In addition to becoming
familiar with these, take note of safety warnings given with specific experiments. These are
noted in this manual.
1. Housekeeping: All designated experimentation areas should be left in a neat orderly
state at the conclusion of an experiment. The following items should be checked:
1. All excess water should be removed from the floor.
1. All loose paper should be picked up and deposited in trashcans.
2. All working surfaces (tables, chairs, etc.) should be cleaned if needed.
3. All miscellaneous items should be returned to their proper initial locations (kits to
stockroom, tools to tool shop, chemicals and glassware to proper stockroom).
4. All hoses should be coiled and placed in designated locations.
5. All glassware should be washed prior to returning to the stockroom.
1. All scales should have weights removed and scale arms locked.
2. All manholes (sewers) should have their lids closed.
3. All drums or containers used should be checked.
4. Check all valves and electrical units. Turn off what is required.
1. Horseplay: Repeated incidents are unprofessional, and will result in a grade penalty.
1. Equipment Difficulties: The student is encouraged to correct any minor equipment
difficulties by taking the appropriate action. However, any major equipment difficulties
should be reported to the lab attendant, instructor, or teaching assistant and the student
should not attempt any further corrective action.
1. Tools: Tools should not be taken out of any stock or maintenance rooms without
checking them out with the designated responsible person. Any tools checked out should
be returned immediately at the completion of their required task.
1. Chemicals: In several of the experiments, chemicals are required to perform the
experiment. Student should check with their instructor as to where to get these chemicals
and what safety precautions, if any, are to be taken in conjunction with the use of these
chemicals. In the case of gases being used, be sure you understand the nature of the hazards
associated with the gas and do not deviate from the procedures as outlined, either oral or
written, by the instructor. Do not use mouth suction to fill pipettes. Waste chemicals are
placed in receivers and are not discharged in the drain.
1. Electrical: In many stances electrical extension cords are required for the operation of
auxiliary equipment. Special precautions should be taken when using these cords. When an
electrical extension cord is checked out, be sure to examine its condition. If you find frayed
or broken wires, insulation broken, prongs bent, no ground, etc. do not use but return to the
stockroom, pointing out the faults to the technician. When using extension cords, be sure
they do not lie on the floor, in particular, when the floor is wet, but are safely supported in
such a fashion that they are not a bodily hazard. When making electrical connections, be
sure the area you are standing in is dry.
1. Accidents: Even with the greatest safety precautions accidents do happen. If any
accident happens, be sure to immediately inform instructor. In the case of serious accidents,
do not attempt first aid, if you are not familiar with the proper technique but do attempt to
make the person comfortable until aid arrives.
1. Unauthorized Areas: Do not touch unauthorized equipment or experiments.
1. Food or Drink: Food and drink are forbidden in laboratories.
1. Smoking: Smoking is not permitted.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT LAB TRAINER

Page 10
DUET, KARACHI ENGR. MIR MUHAMMAD BOZDAR
1. Ventilation: Be sure that hoods are functioning, and that your work areas are properly
ventilated.
1. Attendance: Everyone is required to attend each lab class. If you cannot attend, be sure
to notify the instructor prior to the class, as well as your lab partners. Consistent failure to
observe this rule is considered unprofessional behavior, and will be penalized.
1. Obligation: Each student has a professional obligation to contribute a full and honest
effort in the group execution of experiments and reports.
