Academic Planning & Degree Completion

You will be required to take both lower and upper-division courses at UCI.

• Lower-division courses are numbered 1-99. These courses are usually introductory in
nature and are often taken in the 1st and 2nd year.

• Upper-division courses are numbered 100-199. These courses usually require a more in-
depth study of specific topics and are usually taken in the 3rd and 4th year.

Academic Planning & Degree Completion

Accumulating 180 units to graduate:


• You may need additional elective units to reach the 180-unit minimum beyond the specific course
and subject requirements for General Education and your major
• Also, you may need to exceed the 180-unit minimum in order to complete all requirements if you
decide to pursue multiple majors and/or minors
• There are 3 quarters in an academic year (not including Summer Session). Students must
average 15 units each quarter to reach 180 total units.
• The typical load of a quarter is four 4-unit courses, or 16 units, although most students take 12
units in their first quarter as they transition to the university.
• Credit for AP and IB Exams, college-level courses taken in transfer, and courses taken in UCI’s
Summer Session count towards the 180-unit minimum to graduate.

Components of a Degree
• UC or University Requirements
– Required for students attending all UC campuses.
• UCI Requirements
– Required for all students at UCI, these include the unit and GPA standards already described as well as
General Education (GE) requirements.
• School Requirements
– Required for all students in a particular UCI School, regardless of major.
• Major Requirements
– Specific course and other requirements to earn a degree in the subject area of the major.
– Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts majors tend to have more major requirements.
• Elective Units
– Depending on the number of requirements for your major, there may be additional units needed to reach the
180-unit minimum even after the requirement areas above are completed.
– Students often choose to use elective space in their program to pursue a minor or another major.
