Axial Flow Compressor
Velocity Triangles
Two-Dimensional Approach:
U : Tangential blade speed
C : Absolute flow velocity
Ca: Axial component of C
Cw: whirl or tangential
component of C
V : Relative flow velocity
α : Absolute flow angle
: Relative flow Angle

Work Done Factor
It is the ratio of the actual work absorbing capacity
of the stage to its ideal value.
The work done factor accounts for the effect of
boundary layer and tip clearance losses.
It is denoted by symbol “λ”.
Performance Coefficients
(1) Flow Coefficient (Ø):
• It is defined as the ratio of axial velocity to peripheral speed of the blades.
𝐶𝑎
i.e., Ø =
𝑈
• It is also called as compressor-velocity ratio.
• It is very sensitive parameter to change in angle of incidence.
(2) Loading Coefficient (Ψ) :
It is defined as the ratio of actual stagnation enthalpy rise in the stage to
enthalpy equivalent of peripheral speed of the rotor.
