Suffix Notation in Advanced Mechanics

The document is a problem set for an advanced mechanics of solids course that focuses on using suffix notation to represent tensors and vector operations. It contains 10 problems: (1) taking derivatives of a tensor function; (2-4) evaluating properties of Kronecker and Levi-Civita symbols; (5) representing a cross product using Levi-Civita symbols; (6) using suffix notation to show an identity for dot products of cross products; (7) taking a divergence; (8) showing a quadratic form is unchanged under symmetrization; (9) relating an antisymmetric tensor to its associated vector; (10) showing an invariant quantity. Students are asked to prove various tensor identities and

ES 621: Advance Mechanics of Solids (2014-15 I)

Problem Set No. 1 (Topic: Use of suffix notation)

1. For the function λ = Aij xi xj , where Aij are constants, show that ∂λ/∂xi=(Aij+Aji)xj
and ∂2λ/∂xi∂xj = Aij+ Aji.

2. Show that (i) δij δij =3, (ii) εijk εjki =6, (iii) εijk Aj Ak =0, (iv) δij εijk =0

3. Show that the tensor Bik = εijk Aj is antisymmetric.

4. If Aij is symmetric and Bij is antisymmetric, show that Aij Bij =0.

5. The cross product of two vectors u =(u1,u2,u3) and v =(v1,v2,v3) is the vector w =u
x v whose components are w1=u2v3-v2u3, w2=u3v1-u1v3, w3=u1v2- v1u2. Show that it
can be written as wi = εijkujvk.

6. Using suffix notation show that

(s x t)∙(u x v) = (s∙u) (t∙v) – (s∙v) (t∙u)

7. Let r be the radius vector of a typical point and r the magnitude of r. Prove that

Div (rn r ) = (n+3) rn.

8. Show that the quadratic form Aij xi xj is unchanged if Aij is replaced by its
symmetric part Aij(s).

9. If Aij is an antisymmteric tensor for which the associated vector is ai=½ εijk Ajk,
show that Apq= εpqi ai.

10. Show that the quantity εijk εkjp Aip is invariant.
