There are numerous definitions of the term “management” as conceived by different authors and
practitioners of management. Give your thoughts or ideas pertaining to the following characteristics of
management:
Management implies skill and experience in getting things done through people.
It implies because if you a have good management, when people saw you, they will think that
you are already honed from your previous experiences, your skills.
Management is a process.
It is considered as a process because to have a management, you need to set steps to follow on
achieving something.
Management is a science.
If you want to have management in achieving something, you need to set-up a systematic
process or plan just like how the science solve problems.
Management is an art.
It is an art because to achieve management, it requires skills, creativity and imagination.
Management is a profession.
It is a profession because it consists of the same characteristics like the other profession. It has
knowledge, trainings, organization, and many more.
Management is a group activity.
It is activity because sometimes, it needs to be done by group of people. It involves huge and
wide variety of process.
Management is a system of authority.
It is authority because it implies good leadership. The manager should have this kind of
characteristic to lead the desire action from subordinates.
Management implies a good leadership.
It implies good leadership because it helps the maximization of efficiency and achieve goals.
Management need not to be the owner.
It is because it is not only done by one person, it is done by many people by working together.
Management is intangible.
It is because you can only tell it by the results of your action.

For scientific management, it is an approach that follows a systematic way, and, analyzes and
synthesizes workflows. For classical, it is more like the old ways, people are assigned to their specific
task, efficient, yet they are being drained.
Because of Taylor’s scientific management theory, he created and produced 2 books, the Shop
Management (1903) and The Principle of Scientific Management (1911). Taylor’s theory also is still being
used in today’s generation because the theory really works in managing especially the production of
goods and managing the employees.
The Gilbreth followed the pioneering work in time and motion of Taylor. They also work on how
to reduce the number of motions in a task and focus on the incremental study of motions and time.
For Henry Gantt, he is more known in the classical management theory by his Gantt chart and
the Task and Bonus system. The Gantt chart is a tool that provides representation of what occurs on the
course of the project. His other contribution is more on establishing a standard time for a piece of work
or task. It is also known as progressive rate system that is preferred to workers who were willing to work
hard for additional wages.
Henri Fayol is known to his work the Administrative Management Theory. He is the first one
who attempted a systematic analysis of overall managing pocess. He found out that all activities of
industrial can be divided into 6 groups: technical, commercial, financial, security accounting, and
managerial.
Weber’s Bureaucratic Management Theory claims that it will increase your business’s efficiency.
It contains strict rules and a firm distribution of power. Precision, speed, unambiguity, knowledge of
files, continuity, discrretion, unity, strict distribution, reduction of friction and of material, and personal
cost are optimum point of Weber’s administration.
