Instruction: When Jose Rizal left the Philippines for Spain, he was able to meet many
people and visit many places. In each of Rizal's stopovers, identify a person or a place
he visited. You will write a travel highlighting Rizal's journey to:

Paris, France:

Dr. Jules-Edouard Nicaise

A leading French ophthalmologist. Rizal always visits Dr.


Nicaise to learn and observe his medical operations. Later,
Rizal applied to him as an assistant. Rizal to gain more
knowledge and experience in operating.

Valentin Hocorma Ventura y Bautista


Jose Rizal got a chance to meet and be friend to Valetin during the
stay of Rizal in his house in Paris. It was where he had the
opportunity to listen to the ideas of Rizal which he greatly
admired. He used to read the novel Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo during his free time. He was so impressed by the
work of Rizal's novel Fili that he read it all over again, he described
it as perfect, correct, vigorous, poetic, and deeply felt. When the
printing of Fili was suspended due to the lack of funds, he offered
his money that was being sent by his brother to support the
printing of the second novel.
Barcelona, Spain

Maximo Viola

As a medical student in Barcelona, Spain he met Dr. Jose


Rizal and became his close friend. He helped Rizal and
other propagandas work for justice and changes in the
government of the Philippines. He financed the
publication of Rizal's first book Noli Me Tangere.

1. Maximo Viola

Rizal met Maximo when he went to Barcelona to study. Maximo came from a
wealthy family in Bulacan. They became good friends and were active in the Propaganda
Movement. When Rizal finished writing his novel, Noli Me Tangere, he was disappointed
because he knew that he could not published the piece due to financial problem. When
Maximo heard about the problem, he offered Rizal a three hundred pesos to finance the
printing of the novel.
Maximo Viola was the first one to read Noli Me Tangere as well and Rizal even
wrote in his book, “To my dear friend, Maximo Viola, the first to read and appreciate my
work”. He even travelled with Rizal during his trip around Europe. He accompanied him
and helped him get through his mission.

2. Ferdinand Blumentritt
Blumentritt was an Austrian Scholar who was studying Tagalog, Rizal was so
happy that he sends him a letter and some books. The two exchange letters and became
good friends. Blumentritt was Rizal’s diary because he told him everything that is
happening with him. Blumentritt knew Rizal’s problem and he was inspired by him to fight
for our country.
He gave Rizal some advices and help him with his decisions. Rizal eventually sent
him one last letter before he died. Despite Rizal’s death, Blumentritt continued advocating
for our independence and continued studying our history.
