Impact of Radio, Electricity, and Internet

The document discusses three major scientific and technological developments that impacted the author's life: radio, electricity, and the internet. Radio provided entertainment, information, and a connection to the outside world growing up in a remote area without other amenities. Access to electricity allowed the author to do schoolwork at night and use appliances. The internet serves as a source of knowledge, teaches digital literacy, and connects the author to the global community.

1. Give three other major scientific and technological developments in the world or in
the Philippines that created a large impact on your life. Justify your answer.

I. RADIO

German physicist Heinrich Hertz was the first to recognized radio waves in 1886.
About 1895, the first functional radio transmitters and receivers were created by an
Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, and radio entered industrial operation around 1900.
His work created a significant impact in my life through numerous ways. I spent my
childhood living in a far-flung sitio where there is no electricity, no television, no mobile
phones, no access to the internet as well as playmates, for we are kilometers away from
our neighbors. The radio has provided me entertainment, information, and a sort of
connection to the places outside our remote area. First, radio entertained me in many
different ways. It airs music, audio theater or radio drama and jokes. Some of the radio
drama is based on real life events depicting dilemmas of a sender. After the audio
theater was aired, a lawyer would answer the questions of the sender regarding legal
issues while the doctor responses to medical-related inquiries. I learned a lot from the
two great person. Second, I get to be informed of the current issues/news, weather
updates and announcements that time through the radio. It was helpful specially in
announcing the suspension of classes, holidays, and the happenings nationwide. Lastly,
radio connected me to other places through a segment called “shoutout”. It is a public
greeting to a named person where we get to know where they live, what they are doing
while listening to the radio, and even their birthday. Ultimately, the radio is our family’s
greatest companion that time.
II. ELECTRICITY

Electricity has been around all the while, but functional applications were
discovered to allow efficient use of it. The first practical method for generating electricity
was invented by Alessandro Volta.1831 is the year of major electricity breakthrough
where the fundamental concepts of power production was discovered by British
physicist Michael Faraday. For about 14 years, our sitio has no access to electricity. It
was last February 28, 2015 when finally, there were lights in our house. For some, it is
no big deal since they grew up having lights at night, television, and other electrical
appliances. But it had created a great impact to my life. Primarily, having light bulbs
allowed me to stretch my time specifically letting me work with my assignments and
projects at night. I can also do household chores at dawn for I am able to see things
clearly without carrying a kerosene lamp or waiting for the sun to rise and provide me
light. Moreover, my parents were able to buy a television already. I was not limited to
information and news I can only hear on the radio. Additionally, I was acquainted with
entertaining programs like teleserye, and educational contents. I am already updated of
the TV dramas my classmates used to talk about during class breaks. Finally, we
bought appliances like rice cooker, refrigerator, blender, hand mixer and water
dispenser that really elevated the quality of my life. I can also use electronic gadgets
that greatly help me with my study. With electricity, almost everything is accessible,
doable, and exciting.

III. INTERNET

The Internet is a vast network of networks, a platform for networking. It links

millions of computers worldwide, creating a network through which every computer will
interact with any other computer so long as it is linked to the Internet. It was an
invention of many pioneering experts, programmers and engineers who each
established specific features and innovations that ultimately fused into what we
recognize today as the "Information Superhighway." In my view, the internet is very
beneficial. It serves as my source of knowledge, a teacher, and a gateway to the world.
Perhaps, it is non-negotiable that the Internet provides tons of information. It helps me
in researching for materials that I needed, as if almost everything is answerable by it.
On the contrary, not all the contents provided to me are valid, thus the Internet also
teaches me to be mindful, analytic, and be a critical digital citizen. Moreover, the
internet serves as my teacher. Mostly when I have queries about my assignments and I
need some references to look at, I usually surf the internet for clarifications. And this is
useful, for I am not just learning from the books and lectures at school, I also acquire
additional information that is broadly presented in the internet. Lastly, the internet is like
a ticket or gateway to the world. Put simply, the internet has made the world smaller by
bringing people from different nations together. I get to know a lot of things from other
cultures, and get updated with issues or news even from the other side of the world—a
global village it is.
