Tension Calculation Problem Set

The document provides 7 mechanics problems involving calculating tensions in cables, ropes, and strings connecting various objects. Problem 1 asks to find the tension in a cable supporting a boom. Problem 2 asks to find tensions in 3 cords supporting a hanging block. Problem 3 asks to find tensions and an angle in an equilibrium string system. Problem 4 asks for the tension in a rope centering an automobile supported by a cable. Problems 5-7 ask to find tensions in strings/ropes connecting objects with given masses under various accelerations.

PROBLEM SET

Pls provide a detailed solution to the ff problems

1. Find the tension in the cable shown below. Neglect the weight of the boom.

2. In the figure below block of weight W hangs from a cord which is knotted at o
to two other cords fastened to the ceiling. Find the tension in these 3 cords.
Let w = 50 lbs, Ø2 =30o and Ø3 = 60o. the weights of the cords are negligible

3. The system in Fig. below is in equilibrium with the string in the center exactly
horizontal. Find (a) tension T1, (b) tension T2, (c) tension T3 and (d) angle ɵ.

4. In a ship-unloading operation, a 3500-N automobile is supported by a cable. A

rope is tied to the cable and pulled to center the automobile over its intended
position. What is the tension in the rope?
5. Three objects whose masses are 20 kg, 30 kg, and 40 kg are joined by
strings. The 20 kg object is pulled upward with a force 1200 N. Find the
tensions in the strings between the objects

6. A half ton elevator has a downward acceleration of 1 m/s2. What is the

tension in its supporting cable in N? b) The same elevator has an upward
acceleration of 1 m/s2, what is the tension in its cable now?

7. A 400 kg load of bricks on a 50 kg pallet is raised with an acceleration of 0.40

m/s2. What is the tension in the supporting rope? The empty pallet is lowered
with a downward acceleration of 0.60 m/s 2, what is the tension in the rope
now?
