Chemical Reaction Rate Analysis in ChE

1. The document provides information about a chemical reaction converting chemical A to chemical R using a packed bed reactor with non-porous spherical beads. 2. It defines the specific surface area, bulk density, and porosity of the packed bed. 3. It gives the rate equation for the disappearance of chemical A as being proportional to the concentration of A and defines the rate constant as 0.1 units.

PROBLEM
Chemical A is being converted into chemical R in a vessel packed with non-porous, spherical
beads. The specific surface area of the bed is 60 ft2/ft3 of packed bed, its bulk density is 180
lb/ft3 of packed bed and the porosity of the bed is 0.4. The stoichiometry is
𝐴 → 2𝑅
and the rate if disappearance of A on unit mass of catalyst is
proportional to the concentration of A present in the gas. Thus in
English units, using hours, we found from experiment:
1 𝑑𝑁𝐴
−𝑟𝐴 ′ = − = 0.1 𝐶𝐴
𝑊 𝑑𝑡
1. Write our the equation given, showing units of various terms
2. Find the expression of the rate equation:
a. −𝑟𝐴′′′′
b. −𝑟𝐴
c. −𝑟𝐴 ′′

Solution
1. Based on unit interfacial surface in 2-fluid systems or unit surface of solid in gas solid
systems
′′
c. −𝑟𝐴
1 𝑑𝑁𝑖 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑖 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑒𝑑
𝑟𝑖 ′′ = =

𝑓𝑡 2 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑒𝑑
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑆𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 60
𝑓𝑡 3 𝑟𝑥𝑡𝑜𝑟

𝑙𝑏 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐴 1 𝑑𝑁𝑖
−𝑟𝐴 ′′ ( )=
𝑓𝑡 2 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑
𝑏𝑒𝑑 ∙ ℎ𝑟 𝑆 𝑑𝑡

60 𝑓𝑡 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑡 𝑟𝑥𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑏 𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑦𝑠𝑡 ∙ ℎ𝑟 𝑓𝑡 𝑣𝑜𝑖𝑑

−𝑟𝐴′′ = 0.3 𝐶𝐴
