Design of Steel Structure
TUTORIAL — 2
1. The measurements of loads on floor of slabs of residential buildings are
given below in kilonewtons per square metre.
8x0.90, 12x1.1, 15x1.2, 30x1.4, 40x1.5, 15x1.6, 5x17, (8x0.90 means
eight samples of 0.9 KN/m’ each)
Determine the characteristics load on the floors if the acceptable
probability of the load is not to exceed 5% of the specified load.
. A office building was designed to resist a floor load of 4 N/m’. After the
N
building was constructed, measurement were taken on the various
floors as 12x3:2, 10x3.8, 20x4, $5x4:2, and 8x4.4. -~
Determine the probability of the loads exceeding the specified load of
4kN/m?.
Hint: After calculating (Qn — Q)/a, the probability of exceeding the
specified load (Q) can be found out by referring to the statistical table
for normal distribution, given in any standard book on statistics.
3. A roof having a span of 24m and rise of 4m is spaced at 4m apart.
Assuming ACC sheeting, estimate the dead and live loads on the purlins,
assuming a purlin spacing of 1.40m.
A roof truss is of 16m span, and 2.67m rise is spaced at 5m. Assuming GI!
sheeting, compute the ultimate bending moments for which the purlins
have to be designed if the structure is situated in Srinagar.Applied Mechanics Department
