Background :

Nation classifies vocabulary into four types based on how frequently it occurs
in the language (its frequency) and how widely it occurs (its range). The four
types of vocabulary are namely high frequency words, academic words,
technical words, and low frequency words.

Definition :

The low-frequency vocabulary contains words that you would find in a text
very rarely or words that uncommonly occur in a language, such as
“apopemptic,” “diaphoretic,” and “rebarbative” in English.

Low frequency words are the rest of the words in a language. They consist of a
big number of word families, and even the biggest compared to the other
vocabulary levels, but they rarely appear in most texts. If we count every
single-word items, English may have more than 100,000 word families. Even
the native speakers themselves may not know all of them.

The low frequency words are the biggest group. They include (1) words that
are not quite frequent or wide range enough to be high frequency words, (2)
technical words from other areas (ones person’s technical vocabulary is
another person’s low frequency vocabulary), and (3) words that just occur
rarely.
