Jackson Lake Overture

Jackson Lake Overture premiered at, and was the winning composition of, the Western International
Band Clinic’s Gralia Competition.
The work begins with a heroic Maestoso fanfare, which leads to a rhythmic Allegro. The syncopated
main theme is later transformed into a flowing 3/4 Moderato in Lydian mode. The section begin-
ning at measure 63 should be allowed to move ahead freely, with a climactic return to Moderato at
measure 79 . A Da Capo return to the opening Maestoso is followed by a final and joyful restatement
of the Allegro theme, and the powerful Molto Maestoso conclusion. The final five measures should
be played in a deliberate fashion, allowing time for its bitonal implications to become evident. The
timpanist may wish to consider using hard mallets for the final solo.
