Bandung Geology Museum is the biggest and most complete museum in Indonesia.
It is a well-kept place that attracts a large number of visitors. Opened as early as 1929 as
a geological center by the Dutch, the museum is located in a very spacious colonial
building on jalan Diponogoro. The museum is divided into three exhibitions, geology of
Indonesia in the West wing, History of life in the East wing and geology for Human Life
on the top floor.
The museum has a large collection of fossils, of which about 6000 are on display and
the other 250.000 are kept in a safe. The research department is still very much active,
and next to documentation and exhibition, geologist specializing in fossils, stones,
minerals and volcanoes reside on the top floor.
The most interesting part is the West wing, where the evolution of human life is
explained in both Indonesian and English languages, with colorful posters and ‘loaned
behold’, a very nice collection of life –size dinosaur replicas. Intermingled with several
real fossils of giant land turtles, hippos and other creatures you wouldn’t want to run into
today. In the far corner a selection of skulls can be found, among them is a replica of
popular ‘java man’.
Another very educational and interesting part is the volcano section in the East wing,
with explanations on formation and working of these in Indonesia abundant gunung api,
literally: ‘fire, mountains’.
The museum is very popular among school classes. Unfortunately, only the
evolution of human life on the West wing has English and French speaking guides
available. Besides, for intricate questions the resident geologists will be happy to discuss
matters in depth. All in all Bandung Geology Museum is a very informative institution,
that makes for a responsible educational day trip for young and old, and is a nice
alternative to shopping malls or factory outlets.

What is the benefit of tourism for local people? Well, tourism is now a huge contributor
to the economics most countries. Tourism industry can bring money, job vacancy and
advancement especially to developing regions. However, this money often goes into the pockets
of foreign investors, and only benefits for local people.
Tourism industries will not give much benefit to local people if, for example,
multinational chains don’t care about the surrounding nature when they build new hotels this can
cause many social, cultural and geographical problems. Some local people may get job and
money from that international hotel chain. However in case of missing that opportunity, some of
them still have their own environment.
Moreover, some facts show that tourists tend to go, visit and spend their money in
restaurant, bars, and even luxury hotels of that multinational chains, they less go to such places;
restaurant, bars, hotels, which are owned by local people. This can prevent the local people’s
business from become even larger. Most important thing, tours and excursions of tourism have
little effect on nature, even it can disrupt or destroy ecosystems, and envirotment, and if it does,
the local people will get the risk.
So the local government policies should be put in place to ensure that tourism will make
the benefit spreading widely, the policies should guarantee that tourism will not cause any harm
to any local people or places.

E. The tourist do not want to visit local hotels, restaurants and bars.
This text is for question number 43 and 44.
Faster planes and cheaper flights are making travel easier than before. In the most
‘developed’ societies, visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The tourism
industries of both developed and developing countries have recognised this fact and are learning
to take advantage of it.
There are, however, a few problems associated with this new industry. Initially, there is
the increasing crime rate. Some locals see tourists as easy prey because, not only are they
unfamiliar with the territory and therefore unable to take care themselves, but also they carry
visible items of wealth, such as cameras and jewelry which can be disposed of quickly for profit.
Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of
spreading contagious diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an
epidemic before their illness is diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases which
resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be increasingly concerned about this issue.
Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by
too many visitors. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by
tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays.
These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself
to an extensive tourism development programme.
43. Why does the natural environment become one of the serious problems associated with the
faster planes and cheaper flight? Because ....
A. It easily started an epidemic before their illness was diagnosed
B. They carry visible items of wealth
C. The health problem will increase
D. It can be destroyed by too many visitors
E. It can increase crime rate
44. “One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness is diagnosed.”
(paragraph 3) The underlined word means ....
A. Found
B. Examined
C. Healed
D. Observed
