Into the World of Learning


I. OVERVIEW

This module is designed to offer students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with
English nouns and their different categories specifically with common and proper nouns.
Students should be able to identify nouns according to their individual characteristics.

Did you know in learning common nouns you will be able to know understand proper
nouns? You will be able to provide and state proper nouns with the help of common nouns.

In this module, you will learn to identify common and proper nouns, differentiate the two
and give example with the activities given. Here are the following essential questions that
you will be able to encounter throughout this module:

How can the study of nouns, its kinds and function help us to express ourselves
with others?
What impact does language have on who we are and what we are?
How do nouns function in sentences?

WHAT TO LEARN?

Recognizing Common and Proper Noun


A noun is a word which refers to a person, place, thing, or idea. is a word which
refers to a person, place, thing, or idea. There are several different types of nouns:
Proper nouns and Common nouns

Common nouns name any person, place, thing, or idea. They are not capitalized
unless they come at the beginning of a sentence.
A proper noun is a specific, unique person, place, thing, or idea. Unlike common
nouns, proper nouns are almost always capitalized. This is true whether they begin a
sentence or not. 

Examples:
Common Proper
boy ⇒ James
river ⇒ Mississippi River
car ⇒ Ford
doctor ⇒ Doctor Jefferson
town ⇒ Rockledge
candy bar ⇒ Baby Ruth

Common and proper noun in a sentence.

Common noun: I want to be a writer.


Proper noun: Agatha Christie wrote many books.

Common noun: I’d like to adopt a cat.


Proper noun: Cleopatra is the cutest kitten ever.

Common noun: Would you like a cookuuuuuuuuie?


Proper noun: I’m craving Oreos.

Common noun: Let’s go to the city.


Proper noun: Let’s go to Tarlac.

IV. GENERALIZATION
Noun refers to a name of a person, thing, animal or idea.
There are several different types of nouns: Common and
Proper noun. A common noun is a generic noun that is not
capitalized. Proper nouns are the names of specific people,
places, things, or ideas. Proper nouns should always be
capitalized.

V. POST ASSESSMENT
