This news article from [Link] entitled “DENR stops cemetery dev’t in Cebu
City with 300 mahogany trees illegally cut” is the urgency of the Cebu City because of
rising death rates due to COVID-19. Around 300 mahogany trees were cut down
without permission that’s why DENR must act. The Philippine Congress released a study
that said about 123,000 hectares of the country’s forest cover are lost every year.
Imagine if these will continue for more years there would no forest left.
In this time of pandemic where a lot of people lost lives, some areas are
overcrowded and cannot assess the corpses. They are stuck in the hospital morgues
and crematories because there’s no space for them in cemetery. I understand their
concern about lack of spaces, but we cannot deny the fact that there’s a violation in
cutting down trees. Everything should follow the proper procedure and it is not a
reason about urgency.
Though Mahoganies are not considered endangered, still it ruins the ecosystem.
American President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “A people without children would
face a hopeless future; a country without trees is almost as helpless.”
The Philippines has one of the fastest deforestation rates in the world. The time
to act now is already passed. We should have act yesterday to prevent further damage
in the future. The government program “Tree planting “is a better approach but there’s
no guarantee that tree would remain standing after leaving. There is a lack of
protection on forest as a wildlife sanctuary. Government must put more effort in
reforestation and protection.
I personally participate in tree planting activities also plant on our farm. This
small act can save the environment. I highly encourage the students to plant on their
own backyard. Global warming is no joke. We should protect the future humanity as
well as Earth’s other animal and biological life.
