Q1. Explain the purpose of carrying out an axle load survey for project level evaluation. (4
Marks)
Answer
Axle load refers to the amount of load acting on the axle of the vehicle at both ends. The
important of carrying out axle load survey is to collect preliminary data regarding the range of
heavy axle loads traversing on the concerned road stretch. Axle load survey asses the loading
characteristics of goods vehicle moving on the road. This survey is an effective way of
comparing the damaging effect of heavily loaded vehicles by estimating the whole spectrum of
2
axle loads and include it in design in terms of damaging factor. The purpose of carrying out axle
load survey is also to evaluate and analysis whether the traffic/road stretch is abused or not by
heavy vehicles such as trolley and trucks, dumpers etc. through this survey data such as
equivalent axle load factor are worked out. Equivalent axle load factor (EALF) refers to the
damage per pass to a pavement by an axle with respect to damage per pass of a standard axle.
Q2. Shows an axle load spectrum along Federal Road 10. The government has decided to
upgrade the road with a design life of 10 years. If the number of commercial vehicles per
direction is 500 and growth rate is 2% per annum, calculate the cumulative standard axle load
over the design period. (Assumption: the standard axle load = 8160 kg; damaging power =
4.5)
FIGURE 1: AXLE LOAD
SPECTRUM FOR ROUTE 10
Answer
Given data:
Design life, n = 10 years
Number of commercial vehicle, A = 500 veh
Traffic growth rate, r = 2%
3
Vehicle damage factor, VDF = 4.5
Calculate cumulative number of standard axle
( 1=r )n −1
N=365∗A∗
r [ ∗VDF ]
( 1−0.02 )10 −1
¿ 365∗500∗ [ 0.02 ] ∗4.5=8.99 msa
Determine cumulative standard axle load
cumulative standard axleload=No . of cumulatuve standard axle∗standard axleload
cumulative standard axleload=8.99 x 10 6∗8160=73356.4 x 106 kg
¿ 73356.4 x 10 6 kg∗9.81m/ s2=71945 x 10 6 N ≈ 71.945GN
Q3. Grooving is one of techniques for pavement rehabilitation. Explain the application of this
technique and discuss its benefits and limitations. (5 marks)
Answer
Grooving is the establishment of discrete grooves in the concrete pavement using diamond saw
blades. The main objective of grooving is to break the flow of water across a pavement surface.
4
Thereby, improving tire-pavement contact and reducing the potential for hydroplaning and wet
weather accidents. Grooving may be performed either transversely or longitudinally but it is
more commonly performed longitudinally on highway projects due to ease of construction.
Benefits
Reduces the number of wet-weather accidents
Used when diamond grinding exposes soft coarse aggregate that is known to polish
quickly
Use at curves or intersections where accidents are high.
A uniform spacing of
19 mm between graves is recommended regardless of the type of coarse aggregate.
Limitation
Applicable only to rigid pavements
Surface friction increases.
