AASHTO DESIGN METHOD
The AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (AASHTO, 1993) is the
method used to design new and rehabilitated highway pavements. It was
developed by (American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials) on the basis of AASHTO Road Test.
The AASHO Road Test was a series of experiments carried out by the American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO),] to study the
performance of pavement structures of known thickness under moving loads of
known magnitude and frequency." This study was carried out in the late 1950s in
Ottawa, Illinois.
The equation is:
Here :
The predicted loading: The predicted loading is simply the predicted number
of 80 kN (18,000 lb.) ESALs that the pavement will experience over its design
lifetime.
Reliability: The reliability is the probability that a pavement will perform
satisfactorily for the design period.
Structural Number (SN): The Structural Number is a number expressing the
structural strength of a pavement.
Layer coefficient (a): represents the relative strength of the construction
materials a layer.
Drainage coefficient (m): represents the loss of strength in a layer due to its
drainage.
Serviceability index: is used to define the minimum acceptable level of
quality.
Resilient modulus (MR): It shows the strength of the sub grade.
