Shades of green refer to the legal and social approaches business to implement strategies
that address environmental issues- there are four green approaches: Legal approach, Market
approach, stakeholder approach and Activist approach.
Legal approach also referred to as Light green approach. Under this approach
organization basically carry out environmental obligations that are only required by the law. The
obey rules, laws and regulation but show no environmental sensitivity. It represents a business’s
social obligation.
Market approach- under this category businesses are more environmental sensitive.
Organizations are quick to adopt or introduce products that consumers need or are drawn to- as
more and more consumers change their preferences to sustainable products business that employ
market approach design also change their strategies to incorporate sustainability practices. This
approach is an illustration of social responsiveness.
Stakeholder approach- this approach represent businesses conforming to stakeholder
environmental demands. This strategy also is an illustration of business social responsiveness.
Activist approach- also known as Dark Green strategy. Businesses employing this
strategy are commitment and autonomously take initiatives to improve the environment
regardless of their profitability. It represents high sensitivity to the environment and depicts a
business social responsibility.
The activist approach is the best strategy for implementing Green strategies. The best
strategy is one that influences individuals to act responsibly- to do the right thing regardless of
the consequence. The activist approach draws motivation from within the company and thus it is
sustainable even when there is a change in the external environment.
