MODIFIERS
INTRODUCTION
Good day learners!
How are you doing? Welcome to our first lesson. We will
be probing over a grammar lesson.
In this lesson, we will be talking about Adjectives/
Modifiers, which are words that modify a noun or a pronoun by
describing, identifying, or quantifying words. An adjective
usually precedes the noun or the pronoun which it modifies.
This lesson is a good tool for you to acquire the following skills:
1. identifies the adjectives used in the selections and the
words they modify.
2. distinguishes an appropriate adjective and transforms it
into the degree of comparison being asked.
3. writes an essay using adjectives.

Before we proceed in the discussion of the topic,
kindly answer the pre- test below. Be sure to write your

PRE- TEST ( Recognizing Adjectives)
Underline the adjectives in the following sentences. Draw an arrow from the adjective
to the noun it describes.
Ex. The purple and gold mountains lay in the distance.

3. Five high school students attended the national conference.
4. Mrs. Barcelon’s gray Toyota car is parked under the old acacia tree.

ADJECTIVES/ MODIFIERS
An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun by describing, identifying, or
quantifying words. An adjective usually precedes the noun or the pronoun which it
modifies.
In the following examples, the highlighted words are adjectives:
The truck-shaped balloon floated over the treetops.
Mrs. Morrison papered her kitchen walls with hideous wall paper.
The small boat foundered on the wine dark sea.
The coal mines are dark and dank.
Many stores have already begun to play irritating Christmas music.
A battered music box sat on the mahogany sideboard.
The back room was filled with large, yellow rain boots.
DEGREE OF COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES
Positive Degree
The positive degree is used when simply describing persons or things.
Examples
It is a small pencil.
This is a thick book.
The lion has sharp teeth.
That is a beautiful dress.
He is tall.

Comparative Degree
The comparative degree is used when comparing two person or things.
Examples
The elephant is taller than the horse.
The shirt is longer than the shorts.
Superlative Degree:
The superlative degree of adjectives is formed by adding est to the adjective.
The superlative degree of adjective with two or more syllables is formed by adding
most before the adjective.
Examples
Dado runs the fastest.
Christy is the most responsible person in the class.
This is the longest pencil.

Adjectives of more than two or more syllables form the comparative by using the
adverb “more”, and form superlative by using the adverb “most”.

WRITING A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
Write a descriptive essay creatively about a topic close to your heart using
adjectives/ modifiers. You may use variety of styles depending on your interest in
arts. You may use pictures, comic strip, images and etc. Do this in a long size bond
paper.
You may now take your mastery test after submitting your project.
