FLUID MECHANICS ASSIGNMENT SHEET #1
SUBMIT ON OR BEFORE 28th August 2015
1. (a) By means of a rheological diagram show the characteristics of the following
fluids:
Dialatant, Pseudoplastic, Bingham plastic, Thixotropic
(b) Discuss the effects of temperature and pressure on viscosity.
2. All the curves in the graph of angular deformation (dv/dy or dv/dy) vs. shear stress
can be represented by a general equation
n
dv
τ = A + B, where the values of A (=µ), B and n depend upon the type of
dy
fluid and conditions impressed on the flow (shear stress).
For Newtonian fluid the values are given in the following table. Fill in the blanks for
other fluids.
A (=µ) B n

3. Convert 1 Poise to N-s/m2 and 1cSt into m2/s.

4. If the velocity distribution over a plate is given by u = y − y 2 where u is the
3
velocity in m/s at a distance y metre above the plate, determine the shear stress at y=0
and y=0.15 m. Take dynamic viscosity of fluid as 8.63 poises.
5. A vertical gap 2.35 cm wide of infinite extent contains oil of specific gravity 0.95
and viscosity 2.45 Ns/m2. A metal plate 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 0.15 cm weighing 50 N is to
be lifted through the gap at a constant speed of 0.1 m/s. estimate the force required.
6. The space between two large flat parallel walls 25 mm apart is filled with a liquid
of viscosity 0.7 Pa-s. Within this space a thin flat plate, 250 mm x 250 mm is towed at
a velocity of 150 mm/sec at a distance of 6 mm from one wall, the plate and its
movement being parallel to the walls. Determine the force exerted by the liquid on the
plate. Assume linear variation of velocity.
7. A thrust bearing consists of a 10 cm diameter pad on another pad separated by an
oil film of thickness 1.5 mm. The viscosity of the oil is 80 cP. Compute the power
dissipated in the bearing if it rotates at 100 revolutions per minute.

8. A piston of 7.9 cm diameter rotates concentrically inside a cylinder of 8 cm
diameter. Both the piston and the cylinder are 12 cm long. If the space between the
cylinder and the piston is filled with an oil having a dynamic viscosity µ=2.35 poise,
calculate the torque necessary to rotate the piston at 150 rpm.
9. Derive an expression for the torque required to overcome the viscous resistance
when a circular shaft of diameter D rotates at N rpm in a tapered bearing with
clearance t1 at one end and t2 at the other end. The length of the bearing is L and
viscosity of the lubricating fluid is µ.
