DC Motor Transfer Functions & Current Ripple

This document contains two problems about analyzing the transfer functions and current ripple of a DC motor. Problem 1 involves deriving the transfer functions from the block diagram and replacing the electric dynamics with the DC gain. Problem 2 asks to calculate the peak-to-peak current ripple given parameters of the DC motor like resistance, inductance, torque constant, average current, and switching frequency when supplied by a four-quadrant DC-DC converter.

ELEC-E8405 Electric Drives Exercise 3

Problem 1: Transfer functions of a DC motor

The block diagram of a DC motor is shown in the figure.
(a) Derive the transfer functions

ωM (s) ωM (s)
Gωu (s) = and GωT (s) =
ua (s) TL (s)

(b) Replace the electric dynamics of the machine with the DC gain and formulate
the transfer functions Gωu (s) and GωT (s).

Problem 2: Current ripple

The parameters of a DC motor are: Ra = 1 Ω, La = 10 mH, and kf = 4 Vs. The
average steady-state current taken by the motor is Ia = 100 A and the rotor speed
is 560 r/min. The motor is supplied from a four-quadrant DC-DC converter, where
the unipolar PWM is applied. The DC-bus voltage is Udc = 450 V and the switching
(carrier) frequency is fsw = 4 kHz. Calculate the peak-to-peak current ripple.
