Two-Way Slab Design and Analysis

This document summarizes the design of a two-way reinforced concrete slab. Key details include: 1. The slab has dimensions of 3.475m x 3.3625m and is rectangular with two adjacent edges discontinuous. 2. The effective depth of the slab is determined to be 120mm to satisfy deflection criteria. 3. Load calculations determine a factored uniform load of 11.24 kN/m^2. 4. Moment and shear checks are performed and reinforcement requirements are calculated. Torsional reinforcement is also specified at corners.

Design of slab

Design criteria: Grade of concrete, fck = M 25

Grade of steel, fy = Fe 500
SN Description of calculation
1 Known data:
Slab Id : BC'12
Slab condition Rectangular slab and Two Adjacent Edge Discountinious

slab dimension ly = 3.475 m longer span

lx = 3.3625 m shorter span
ly/lx = 1.033 ly/lx < 2. So this is two way slab.

D C

D
Both end of unit strip are not continious so (l/d)basic=23

2 Determination of depth of slab

From deflection control criteria
(l/d)max<(l/d)basic*αβγ for shorter span and assuming αβγ = 1.4
So, d > 104.425mm and for (l/d)basic = 23
Hence providing,
Effective depth,d = 120 mm
Effective cover, d' = 30 mm
Total slab depth,D= 150 mm
3 Load calculation
Load condition Load(kN/ Remarks
m^2)
Self weight of slab = 3.75 = 25kN/m^3 * D
Live load = 3 LL = 3kN/m^2
Screed= 0.46
Floor finish(FF) = 0.285 0.715kN/m^2
Total Load = 7.495 kN/m^2
Factored total UDL,w= 11.24 using FOS = 1.5

4 Design table (designing for unit width of slab, i.e for b=1m)
Shorter span (lx) Longer span (ly)
Terms
midspan support midspan support
Span coefficient (α) 0.03665 0.04898 0.035 0.047
Moment, BM (kNm) 4.659 6.226 4.449 5.974

Check for the depth of slab, for max. moment value. As slab is singly reinforced :
Mumax ≤ Mulim(=0.362*fck*xulim*b(d-0.416xulim))
So, d ≥ 43.005 mm

Ast required (mm^2) 90.622 121.74 86.476 116.715

<Ast <Ast <Ast <Ast

5 Checks
Minimum area of steel to be provided = 0.12% of bD = 180 mm^2
Max. allowable spacing of reinforcement=300mm and 3d= 300 mm
6 Check for shear:
Shear force in slab,Vumax = w*lx/2*1m = 18.901 kN
Shear stress,τv= Vumax/bd = 0.158 N/mm^2
Shear strength of concrete, τc = 0.29 N/mm^2
τc modified = τc*k = 0.377 N/mm^2
τc max = 3.1 N/mm^2
τv < τs + k*τc and τv <τc max. So, safe in shear

7 Check for deflection

for shorter span [Link],
(l/d)max<(l/d)basic*αβγ
where, (l/d)basic = 23
α= 2
So, to be safe in deflection d> 73.09783 mm
Safe in deflection
8 Provision of torsional reinforcement
Torsional reinforcement is provided at corners in area of 0.2lx*0.2lx i.e.0.6725*0.6725=0.45225m^2
providing reinforcement bars of φ 8 mm
Area of torsional reinforcement required at top abd bottom corners :
i having both edge dicontinuous =75% of Ast x= 196.3495 mm^2
spacing required= 172.16 mm
ii having One edge continuous =37.5% of Ast x= 98.17477 mm
spacing required= 344.32 mm
iii having both edge dicontinuous No torsional reinforcement are required
Two Adjacent Edge Discountinious

longer span
shorter span
ly/lx < 2. So this is two way slab. 0.6725

t continious so (l/d)basic=23

Mx=αx*w*lx^2 & My=αy*w*lx^2

alue. As slab is singly reinforced :

m*b(d-0.416xulim))
So,ok i.e.d provided >d required

Mu = 0.87*fy*Ast*(d-0.416xu)

so provide minimum requirement
