Purpose of Material in Language Learning

The document discusses the role and purposes of materials in language learning. It identifies four main purposes: 1) As a source of language, whether the only source in foreign language contexts, for extracting information from textbooks, or in monolingual situations. 2) As a learning support, materials should have recognizable patterns but not fixed formats, involve thinking, stimulate cognition rather than being mechanical, have a sense of progression, and teach language use. 3) As motivation and stimulation, engaging learners in the content. 4) For reference, allowing learners to review language learned.

Chapter 9: Role of Materail

[Link] of Material
There are 4 reasons/purpose of using material
i. As a source of language.
ii. As a learning support.
iii. As a motivation and stimulation.
iv. For reference.

I: As a source of language
It will act as a source of language in the following 3 situations.

A. Situation 1: English Is Foreign Not Second Language.

For this situation, ESP classroom may be the only source of English.
 Material needs to present real language.
 It must fulfills the requirements of the learners.

B. Situation 2: Learners Need To Extract Information From English

Medium Subject Text Books.
 Reading only courses could be suitable to such a situation.
 Variety of sources must be there like magazines, textbooks and letters etc.
 If variety is not available then only magazines will provide journalistic style (for range of
features, range of material should be there).
 Classroom is the primary source of language:
 Exposure to language must be maximum, but not everything needs to be studied in
detail.

Situation 3: Monolingual Situation

 Use of rubrics (instructions).
 Situation 1: Begin with low level of language.
 Situation 2: Use both languages and gradually remove the L1.
Ii. LEARNIGN SUPPORT
A. When material is used as a learning support, following characteristics must be present in
It.
B. It must have recognizable pattern (e.g.: letter pattern, pattern of the essay )
C. It must not have a fixed format (e.g.: by only providing magazines, one style that is
journalistic style is provided).
D. It must involve learners in thinking.
E. The activities (material) stimulate the cognitive abilities rather mechanical process.
F. It must have sense of progression.
G. Learners must know how to use the language.

Situation: Ready mate texts with 10 questions are available in the market. These questions
must be more than 10 and less than 10 but some questions are just fillers.
The questions must fulfill the following objectives
 Real Objectives
 Carrier and Real content detection.
III. MOTIVATION AND STIMULATION
