A). Comment on the personality of Michael [You need to identify the personality
traits that he possesses and explain them in context of the tv show?
Personality traits of Michael Scott.
Michael Scott is self-centered in a cartoonish manner, he is loyal to his subordinates, and Michael is
lively and charismatic.
Neuroticism. Michael Scott displays anxiety and rumbles when Jan tells him about downsizing.
He is childish and overreacts without fully listening.
Extraversion. Michael is an extrovert and very social.
Low conscientiousness. Michael very rarely does work. He tends to cause shenanigans in the
office all day and very rarely engages in helpful work. All he does is entertain his employees in
the office.
B). Comment on the motivation and satisfaction levels of Jim, Dwight and
Pam [Give reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction of each, you may
apply/relate any suitable motivation theory?
Motivation and satisfaction levels
Jim. Jim is motivated. Although, He does not enjoy what he does and he even goes ahead and claims
that he is boring himself talking about what he does in the office but still Jim appears to be motivated
and satisfied with his work. He was for example given an opportunity for promotion in another
branch and he turned the offer down.
Dwight. Dwight is highly motivated and satisfied as he is in Michael's good books. He seems
enthusiastic about his work and work place in general.
Pam. Pam is not highly motivated at her place of work. Her boss, Michael Scott, occasionally
cracks unnecessary jokes that make her uncomfortable. "You think she is cute now, you should
have seen her a couple of year’s age." He even torments her for his own amusement. When she
gives him the faxed agenda he tosses it in the trash can and laughs [Link] appears not to be
satisfied. She for example complains about facilities in the office, more so her chair. She persistently
tells Michael to buy her another chair. She also complains about the photocopier. It is important to
note however, that as much as she complains, it does not appear to be a major issue to deter her from
doing her work.
C). briefly comment on the overall culture of the company?
The Adhocracy Culture. This kind of culture is less strictly defined. The Culture of the company is
one where there is a lot of freedom to express light moments in the office and they are encouraged to
have social activities in the office. Even those who seem not to be on board like Steve eventually
agree with Michael Scott that it is fine to have social activities in the office.
D). Comment on Michael’s leadership style, is it task-oriented or relationship
oriented?
Michael's leadership style
Relationship oriented. Michael Scott is for focused on his employees thinking of him as the best
boss he even goes to an extent of getting a mug with the words 'world's best boss'. His main
focusing is his employees liking him and his leadership. He claims to be a friend first, a boss second
and an entertainer third. No, Michael's style will not reap results. His need and desperation to be
liked by his employer might have an opposite effect. He spend the entire time walking around the
office and he does not get any work really done.
Michael Scott's leadership style is relationship-oriented. If feel it is a good style that encourages
employee freedom since it creates a warm work environment where employees feel appreciated and
recognized. But still it will not reap results
E). Looking at the culture and attitudes of employees in the workplace, will
you want to work for this company if you were Ryan? Why or why not? [Your
answer should be detailed referring to as many OB concepts that you can
relate like effect on moods and emotions, withdrawal behavior, workplace
deviance, group behavior etc.?
No, I would not want to work at Dunder Mifflin.
Ryan seems not to like the organization. However, if I were Ryan I would not work for such an
organization.
The first red flag is when Michael asks Dwight to eat the jell O with the stapler because there are
starving people. He also refuses to discipline Jim despite his nasty joke on Dwight. He instead bursts
out [Link] upon some of these facts I would not prefer to work in Dunder Mifflin.
