@l The "be" verb can be used with a noun (Chapter 1) or an adjective (Chapter 2). The "be" verb
can also be used with a place.

@! Follow this pattern to make positive and negative sentences with the "be" verb and a place:

On the right are some prepositions:

w Usually, for rooms, countries, and cities,use the preposition ln.


For things like a deck or balcony, use on. Another important behind
preposition is at. At tells the general location of something.

@l Sometimes,the word the is used before the place, but not always. Here are some exampleswithout fhe:

Sl Usually, do not use the word the with people or proper nouns.

@*There are two ways to explain where something is. You can put the subjectfirst, then the "be" verb, then
the place. 01, you can put there is (for a singular subject)or therc are (for a plural subject),then the

One student looks at the picture below for one minute and then closes the book. Then that same student
makes two positive sentences and two negative sentences about the picture while the other student looks
at the book and makes sure the sentences are correct. Switch and repeat a few times.

A lamp is on the table. Five rubber bands are behind the paper clips.
A book is not under the purse. Three pencils are not next to the camera.
B. That's right. Very good.
