Grade 7 Reading Comprehension Study

This study aimed to assess the reading comprehension skills of 7th grade students at Gerona Catholic School during the 2018-2019 school year. Researchers used a descriptive research method and test to determine student strengths and weaknesses. The results showed that sequencing events was the most difficult skill, followed by general sense of passage/sentence, antonyms, and main idea. Students performed average in predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions. Overall, the students' reading comprehension levels were below developing proficiency in vocabulary and grammar.

This study aimed to access the reading comprehension skills of the grade 7 students of

Gerona catholic school during the school year 2018-2019 and to identify their reading

strengths and weaknesses.

The descriptive method of design was used in this study.

The study showed the reading comprehension difficulties of the grade 7 students as

per result of the test such as: sequencing of events as the most difficult followed by

general sense of passage/ sentence, antonyms and recognizing the main idea, tailed by

the inference, followed by distinguishing fucks from opinion and synonyms and tailed

by identifying characters traits and found that among the content area tested, only in

the predicting outcomes and drawing conclusion the students found average. Based on

the result and findings, the following conclusions were derived: the students

difficulties was way below the developing level of proficiency in reading

comprehension where the students experience difficulties in all the components in

vocabulary and in grammar, an English proficiency test should be administered at the

very start of the school year to determine the baseline, the strength and weaknesses of

the learners which would be the bases of the language teachers and administrators to

conceptualize better teaching strategies, incorporating remedial reading classes,

employing innovative approaches, and adopting collaborative learning activities and

utilizing reading games, language teachers must be given opportunity to gain


proficiency in teaching the language through continuous training and seminars-

workshops that would update themselves in language teaching and enrich their

teaching methodologies.
