CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Bacteria are found everywhere. They are all over around us, some are good
bacteria and some causes harm. It is said that bacteria are one of the leading causes of
serious diseases like typhoid fever, tetanus, syphilis, tuberculosis, and a lot more. One of
these bacteria is E. coli.
E. coli is a type of bacteria that normally live in the intestines of animals,
including humans. Yet, several types of E. coli, especially E. coli 0157:H7 can cause
intestinal infection. The symptoms of intestinal infection are diarrhea, abdominal pain,
and fever. More serious cases can lead to bloody diarrhea, dehydration, or even kidney
failure. People with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, young children, and
older adults are more risk for developing these complications. Most of it is caused by
contaminated food or water. (Pietrangelo, 2015). Humans develop new antimicrobial
products from different medicinal plants. One of these is Ruellia tuberosa.
Ruellia tuberosa is from Acanthaceae family. Ruellia tuberosa is also called
ruellia, popping plant, cracker plant, fever root, meadow weed, Minnie root, pink-striped,
trumpet lily, snapdragon root (Stuart, 2015). This wild plant is known for its fruit that
pops when it gets wet.
Its pretty surprising to know that this popping plant have anti-inflammatory, anti-
oxidant, antioxiceptive, and gastro protective properties (Stuart, 2015). Ruellia tuberosa
is also diurectic, analgesic, anti-diabetic, anti-pyretic, and antihypertensive (Vermeulen,
2013).
Statement of the Problem
This study was conducted to determine if the stem of Ruellia tuberosa can inhibit
the growth of bacterium E. coli.
Specifically, this study will sought answers to the following questions:
1. Does the stem of Ruellia tuberosa have phytochemicals responsible for
antibacterial property?
2. Is the stem of Ruellia tuberosa effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli?
3. Are there any significant differences between commercialized antibacterial
product and the stem extract of Ruellia tuberosa as an antibacterial?
Hypotheses
1. The stem of Ruellia tuberosa has phytochemicals responsible for antibacterial
property.
2. The stem of Ruellia tuberosa is effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli.
3. There are significant differences between commercialized antibacterial product
and the stem extract of Ruellia tuberosa as an antibacterial.
Significant of the Study
This study is significant to the following:
To the community, the people in the community will have cheaper, effective, and
safer antibacterial products from Ruellia tuberosa stem. They can treat diseases that are
caused by E. coli.
To the people who have Ruellia tuberosa plant, they can use the stem of the R.
tuberosa as an antibacterial and, probably, they can have an income from it.
To the researchers, they will gain knowledge about the focus of the study. They
can also contribute in the field of medicine by developing new antibacterial against E.
coli out of the Ruellia tuberosa stem extract.
Scope and Delimitation
This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Ruellia tuberosa stem
extract against E. coli.
Ruellia tuberosa stem extract will be tested to evaluate its effectiveness against E.
coli and compared with the commercialized antibacterial product. The antibacterial
activity will be shown in terms of zone of inhibition.
