Grade high school sophomore
Language level high intermediate since they are students in English club who wants to
major English-related departments
School environment well-developed city (so there would be many students whose parents both
are busy working)
Learning style usually rote learning, but they are getting used to speaking activities and
watching clips recently
Educational background they are students of public high school, and most English classes they had
taken were about reading and grammar related to the K-SAT
Short-term needs they want to do some English activities that they can add to their student
record of this semester
Long-term needs they want some English activities and experiences that would be helpful
for entering university departments related to English next year
2. Authentic source selection

Reason for When I first watched this movie, it was really impressive, especially visually, because
selection of the button eyes. I think that the impression can effectively attract students’ attention
to the material. It would not be boring since the story is somewhat lively, dynamic, and
thrilling. Besides, since it is an animation movie, the lines are not too long and the
vocabularies used are not too difficult, which makes them easier for students to
understand. Regarding the content of the material, I think we can discuss about the
problem that the main character confronted, which is choosing between the reality with
problems, and perfect but not real world. The topic is quite thoughtful, and it would be a
good subject to be on student records.
Plan to use show the clip of the movie to students, and implement activities such as thinking about
what would you do if you were Coraline, talking about what would you choose between
problematic reality and perfect illusion, and so on.
3. Course objectives

4. Course activities
4.1. Readiness activities
i) Activity student instruction
Think of your parents. Have you ever felt sad of disappointed because of your parents? What
happened? How did you feel? What did you want them to do in that situation? What did you want to do in
that situation? Have you ever wanted to escape from reality because of that?
If you do not have experiences related to your parents, then come up with your experience that you want to
escape or run away from your situation because of any other problems you were suffering.
Give a vivid description of your experience for 5 minutes in small groups.
ii) Activity implementation (describe when you will implement this activity, activity procedure, and
expected time).
I will present this activity before showing the video clip. I will show students a PowerPoint slide
with family picture and a picture of a boy/girl who is thinking about his/her problems. Then, I will ask
students to brainstorm for their experiences about their sadness or disappointment related to their parents.
(Or other experiences related to any other problems for the students who does not live with their parents).
The whole class will spend 10 minutes on brainstorming. Using the brainstorming ideas, students will share
their experiences and feelings in small groups for 5 minutes.
iii) Activity goal and rational
The goal of this readiness activity is to make students sympathize with the main character of the
movie clip they are going to watch. This will get the students ready for watching the movie. I will try to
encourage students to connect their own experiences with the content of the movie so that they can focus on
the movie and sympathize with the situation.
4.2. Experiential activities
i) Activity student instruction
You are going to watch a movie clip about a girl named Coraline, who has to choose between reality
and dream-world. Imagine you are the girl, Coraline, in the situation. Try to think as if you were the girl,
Coraline. What would you feel? What would you do in that situation? What would be in your dream-world?
ii) Activity implementation
I will present this activity right before I play the video. I will show students a PowerPoint slide with
the picture of the main character, Coraline. I will introduce her to students with the slide and ask students to
think about their feelings as they watch the video. It would take 5 minutes for my explanation and
instruction.
iii) Activity goal and rational
The goal of this experiential activity is to make students prepare for watching the video. This will
give students a guide to do or think while watching the video. I will try to emphasize that they should be
think as if they become the main character. Connecting themselves and sympathizing with the character
would be stressed throughout this activity.
