Impact of Fixed Slots on Wind Turbine Blades

The document discusses previous studies on the effect of adding slots to wind turbine blades. Several studies found that slots can increase lift by up to 30% with no significant increase in drag. Specifically, one study found a slotted blade design increased average power output by 28% compared to a straight blade. The proposed study would analyze how varying the depth, width, length and position of slots on a blade impact performance of a small-scale horizontal axis wind turbine using the NREL S826 airfoil profile. Performance would be evaluated for each slot variation to determine the optimal slot geometry.

Initial Title:

The Effect of Leading Edge Slot on the Blade Performance of a Small-Scale Horizontal Axis Wind
Turbine (HAWT)

Initial Literature Review

Slot going upward:

The effect of multiple fixed slots and a trailing-edge flap on the lift and drag of a clark y airfoil by
Fred E. Weick

Drag and lift:

Separation control on a thick airfoil with multiple slots blowing at small speeds by C. Wang et. al., 1999

Drag and lift:

A study by (Belamadi et al., 2016) on the aerodynamic performance analysis of slotted airfoils for
application to wind turbine blades
the control system (flow device) improves aerodynamic performance only over a specific range of angles of
attack. At moderate and high angles of attack, from 10 degrees to 20 degrees, the slot configuration outperforms
the baseline configuration.

Another study (Zao Ni et al., 2019) on improved performance of a slotted blade using novel slot design.

Maximum lift coefficient: 58%

Lift to drag Ratio: 14% increase

Slot Going Downward:

A study made by (Gupta et. al., 2013) discussed innovative blade designs using NACA 4412 airfoil,
comparing them with a straight swept blade.

Power Output: Comparison between 4 blade design

Straight Blade: 198.1 kW

Turbicle Blade: 45.8 kW

Winglet Blade: 203 kW

Slotted Blade: 236.3 kW

A comparative study by Ibrahim et al. (Ibrahim et al., 2015) on three different blade designs: Baseline
blade, Slotted blade, and trailing edge tubercle blade.

Design for Slotted Blade:

Trailing edge Turbicle:

Average power coefficient (based on Betz law):

Straight Blade: 0.36

Turbicle Blade: 0.13

Slotted Blade: 0.39

A study made (beyhaghi et. al., 2017) on improvement of Aerodynamic performance of cambered Airfoils
Using Leading-edge Slot NACA 4412

lift coefficient: Average 8% increase

Drag coefficient: No significant drag penalty

Another study with same authors (Beyhaghi et. al., 2018) investigated the effect of slot’s width, inlet angle,
and vertical position are studied and the appropriate range of values of each variable is determined.
lift coefficient: Up to 30% increase
Drag coefficient: No significant drag penalty

My propose study:
Using the model of slotted airfoil of Ibrahim et al., 2015 in his comparative study on three different
blade designs: Baseline blade, Slotted blade, and trailing edge tubercle blade.

Airfoil: SHAWT with NREL S826 airfoil profile (Korgstad and Lund, 2011)

Geometry of the Slot: The inlet slot is parallel to the chord of airfoil, while the outlet slot is perpendicular to the
chord of airfoil.

Varying the Depth, Width, Length of the slot geometry and the percentage of it on the blade from the inner part
(root) to the outer part of the blade. Do a performance evaluation for every variation.
