MEDIA INFLUENCER FROM THE PHILIPPINES
CATRIONA ELISA MAGNAYON GRAY
Catriona Elisa Gray (born January 6, 1994) is a Filipino TV Host, singer, model and
beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss World Philippines 2016. She represented the
Philippines at the Miss World 2016 pageant. Catriona Gray’s parents are her Scottish-born
Australian father Ian Gray, and Filipina mother Normita Ragas Magnayon. Her father hails from
Fraserburgh, a small town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, while her mother is from Oas, a first-
class municipality in the province of Albay, Philippines. Catriona Gray’s birthday is on January 6,
1994, and she was born in the city of Cairns in Queensland, Australia. Catriona is named for her
paternal grandmother, Catherine Gray, who had emigrated with her family from Scotland to
Western Australia in the 1950s. Her name is derived from the Gaelic (one of the Celtic
languages native to Scotland) translation of her grandmother’s name, hailing back to her family
roots in Scotland. As Miss Universe Philippines 2018, Catriona Gray was then eligible to
represent the nation in the Miss Universe 2018 pageant held in the IMPACT Arena, Muang
Thong Thani in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand. Her slow-motion walk, also known as the
Catriona Gray “lava walk”, earned her praise from fans and from international supermodels such
as Tyra Banks. Her poise, distinctive walk, confidence, and insightful answers during the
question and answer portions of the competition eventually led to her winning the crown. With
Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crowning her, Catriona Gray
became Miss Universe 2018. She is the fourth Miss Universe from the Philippines, following
Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969), Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973), and Pia Wurtzbach
(Miss Universe 2015).
CATRIONA GRAY’S INFLUENCE TO ME AND TO THE WORLD
As a media influencer, it is so hard to persuade people in your own ways especially we
have different perspectives in a different ways but our very own Miss Universe 2018
Catriona Gray is an exemption. She influenced me in a way that there is hope and unity
to everybody in our country and she captures me the way she speaks about the things
that make us hope and make sure that everything will be alright in God’s time. She
influences me how confident and how courage she fight the situations in her life and she
amaze me in her personality. Her personality with a beautiful and everlasting love to her
people and to her nation. Lastly, she is an independent woman and a role model to
everyone because she possesses a great talent for creativity and self-expression, typical
of many accomplished writers, poets, actors and musicians. She is also witty, owns the
gift for gab, and savors the limelight.
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray has been recognized as a ‘Women of Influence’ by
the Cosmopolitan Philippines for the humanitarian aid in response to the Covid-19
pandemic. Catriona is no stranger to using her voice and platform to help others and
especially in such tough times; she has always tried to help the communities and people
in her community who needed help. As soon as the pandemic hit the community, she
reached out to ‘Young Focus’, a non-profit organization she’s been working with, to see
how they can serve the families in Tondo, where necessities are scarce. Together, they
launched the #NoWorkNoRice campaign, a fundraiser to supply families with 15
kilograms of rice along with other food every 10 days until the lockdown ended. Gray is
optimistic and possesses the resilience to overcome many setbacks. She is socially
active, popular, and inspires people with her sunny "happy go lucky" attitude. When
used positively, Catriona Gray's talent for self-expression can be a great inspiration force
in the world, uplifting others, and bringing much success and happiness to her.
MEDIA INFLUENCER OUTSIDE THE PHILIPPINES
SELENA MARIE GOMEZ
Selena Marie Gomez was born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas to father Ricardo and
former stage actress Amanda. The actress was named after former Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.
She has two younger half-sisters: Gracie and Victoria. Selena had a hard childhood; her mother had
her when she was just 16 years old and her parents split when she was young. Her mother worked
hard to provide for the family while growing up, though they often had very little. Selena wanted to be
an actress after watching her mother prepare for stage productions herself. The actress began
auditioning for various roles, where she met Demi Lovato. The two later worked together in “Barney &
Friends” in 2002, the same show they auditioned for when they met. Selena has received numerous
accolades and awards for her work. In 2017, she was named Billboard Woman of the Year. From
2011 to 2014, Selena dated Justin Bieber in a highly publicized and highly discussed relationship. The
actress has been public about her health struggles: she suffered from Lupus for several years. Later,
she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As of August 2020, Selena has more than 185 million
followers on Instagram, 61.8 million followers on Twitter, 61 million followers on Facebook, 20.9 million
followers on TikTok and 26 million subscribers on YouTube.
SELENA GOMEZ INFLUENCE TO ME AND TO THE WORLD
Selena Gomez is one of my favorite in terms of international artist and media influencer.
Although she is an artist and a very famous media influencer, still she’s very humble to
the person that surrounds her and that inspire me to choose her as a great media
influencer outside the Philippines. Behind that, she is far from any ordinary celebrity. She
has a charity that motivated children to continue their lives and achieve their dreams and
also, we have the same motivation in life which is according to her, change is constant in
her world, requiring adaptability and courage. With her upbeat and often inspiring
personality, Selena Gomez makes friends easily and attracts people from all walks of
life. She has a way with words and an uncanny ability to motivate others.
The most followed person on Instagram for three years until soccer star Cristiano
Ronaldo recently usurped her; Gomez is a phenomenal celebrity influencer. With
over 144 million followers, the award-winning singer has often used her social to
promote charitable causes such as her initiative against human trafficking and protecting
children from violence. Aside from obvious professional plugs, she also posts many
personal photos and videos to interact with her huge fan base. It helps to already be
famous to become a social media influencer, but she demonstrates that you need to
have a raw or personal touch and engage with your followers if you want to do well on
Instagram. Besides her music, Gomez has taken her role-model status seriously,
whether it's sending encouraging messages to fans on social media, visiting hospitals or
getting awards for her public service. Selena Gomez is really a role model to our
country.
