1.A 500V series motor having armature and field resistance of 0.2
and 0.3ohm respectively runs at 500 rpm when taking 70 amps.
Assuming unsaturated field. Find out its speed when field divertor
of 0.684 ohm is used constant torque load.

Given:

V = 500V, Ra = 0.2 ohm, Rse = 0.3ohm, Ia1 = 70A, N1 = 500rpm, Rdiv =

0.684ohm.

Solution

Back emf Eb1 = V – Ia1(Ra + Rse) = 500 – 70(0.2+0.3) = 465V

Let Ia2 be the current taken and ∅2 be the flux produced, when a diverter is
connected across the series field.

Since torque remains constant

∅1Ia1 = ∅2Ia2………………………………………………( 1)

but

∅ ∝ current through series field

∅1 ∝ I a1

Current through the series field when a divertor is connected

= I a2 × R dir ⁄(R dir + R se ) = 0.695 I a2

Flux in this case ∅2 ∝ 0.695 Ia2 substituting in (1), we get

2.A 250V DC series motor takes 40A of current when developing a
full load torque at 1500rpm. Its resistance is 0.5ohm. if the load
torque varies as the square of speed. Determine the resistance to
be connected on series with the armature to reduce the speed to
1200rpm. Assume that the flux is proportional to the field current.

Given:

Supply voltage, V = 250V, Ia1 = 40A, Speed N1 = 1500 rpm

T ∝ N 2 , N2 = 1200 rpm, Resistance (Ra + Rse) = 0.5ohm

To find:

Resistance to be connected in series with the armature.

Solution:

Back emfEb1 = V − I a1 (R a + R se ) = 250 − (40 × 0.5) = 230V

Since T ∝ N 2

T2 N2 2 1200 2

T1 N1 1500

T ∝ ∅Ia

T1 ∝ ∅Ia1

T2 ∝ ∅Ia2

T1 ∝ Ia12

T2 ∝ Ia22
(I a2 ⁄I a1 ) 2 = 0.64

(Ia2⁄40)2 = 0.64

Ia2 = 32A

External resistance is connected in series with armature

Back emf= V − I a2 (R + R a + R se ) = 250V − 32(0.5R) = 250 − 16R

3.A 220 V DC shunt motor takes 5A on no-load test and runs at

750rpm. The resistance of armature and shunt field winding are
0.2ohm and 110 ohm respectively. Calculate the speed when
motor is loaded and taking a current of 50A. Assume that
armature reaction weakens the field by 3%.

Given:

V=220V, Ia = 5A, N1 = 750rpm, Ra = 0.2ohm, Rsh = 110 ohm, IL = 50A

Armature reaction weakens the field by 3%. i.e.∅2 = 0.97∅

To find: Speed N2

Solution:
V 22O
Shunt field current Ish = R = 11O = 2A
sh

No load armature current, IaO = IO − Ish = 5 − 2 = 3A

Back emfEb1 = V − I aO R a = 220 − (3 × 0.2) = 219.4V

Load armature current, Ia2 = IL − Ish = 50 − 2 = 48A

Now back emf, Eb2 = V − I a2 R a = 220 − (48 × 0.2) = 210.4V

current of 50A, effective armature resistance is 0.4ohm. what
resistance must be placed in series with the armature to reduce
the speed to 600 rpm. The torque remaining constant.

Given:

Supply voltage, V = 500V, Ia = 5A. Ra = 0.4ohm, Speed N1 = 700rpm, Speed N2

= 600rpm
To find:
External Resistance Re

Solution:

Back emf, Eb1 = V – IaRa = 500 – (50*0.4) = 480V

RT = Ra + Re

SinceIsh is constant.

∅1 = ∅2

Eb2 = V − I a (Ra + R e ) = 500 − 50RT

R t = 1.77Ω

R t = 0.4 + Re = 1.77

Re = 1.37Ω
