EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN MORO GULF MINADANAO


 A tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastates
the Moro Gulf on the southern island of Mindanao on August
16, 1976, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people.

 Ninety percent of all the deaths were caused by the tsunami.


Hardest hit were Moslem Communities where the most of the
homes were close to the shoreline or built on piles in the sea. The
great number of deaths in these communities is attributed to lack
of awareness of the potential danger from earthquakes and
tsunamis in the region.

TROPICAL STORM SENDONG “WASHI”
 Typhoon Sendong hit the northern part of Mindanao island on
December 16, 2011, killing at least 1,080 people.

 The cost of damages to infrastructure, agriculture and school


buildings wrought by Tropical Storm Sendong (international
codename Washi) has reached almost P1 billion worth of,
according to the disaster agency. The National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that the
estimated cost of damages from the deadly storm has reached
P999,946,415.

TROPICAL STORM URING “THELMA”
 Tropical Storm Thelma unleashes flash floods on the central city of
Ormoc on Leyte island on November 15, 1991, killing more than
5,100.

 It hit Leyte and Negros provinces and dumped torrential rains that
caused massive flash floods in Ormoc City. Its damages ran up to P1
billion.
 Much of the devastation caused by Typhoon Thelma especially that on
Leyte Island, was believed to be a result of widespread logging
occurring in the area at the time. Due to the logging, the hills above the
port city of Ormoc were stripped bare of vegetation, and there was
nothing to stop the rainwater and accompanying mudslides from rushing
down the hills into the city.
