Activity Title: Mixtures
Learning Target: 1. Differentiate homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture
2. Identify mixtures either solutions, colloids or suspensions
References Titles: Science in Action 6
Author: Ayuste [Link] Page No.: 24- 30
Concepts:
MIXTURE - a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Homogeneous- has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout.
ex. When coffee powder dissolves in hot water it will have a single phase which is liquid.
Heterogeneous- consists of visibly different substances or phases.
ex. In mixed nuts, you can still identify different solids or nuts.
Types of Mixtures
SOLUTION- A homogeneous mixture that is made up of a solute and a solvent.
ex. salt in water
SUSPENSION- A heterogeneous mixture wherein insoluble particles are suspended in a liquid
or gas. ex. antibiotic (the solid particle settle down while the liquid particle separates at
the top)
COLLOID- A heterogeneous mixture wherein the particles are evenly dispersed or scattered
throughout another substance
TYPES OF COLLOID
AEROSOLS: SOLID OR LIQUID MIXED WITH GAS ex. fog, smoke
SOLS-: SOLID MIXED WITH LIQUID ex. paint
EMULSION: LIQUID WITH LIQUID ex. milk, mayonnaise
GEL:LIQUID IN SOLID ex. jelly
Exercise:
Give an example of the following mixtures that are usually found at home. Explain
your answer.
1. Solution _____________________________________________________________________________

Romans 15:7
“Accept one another then, just as Christ accepted you.”
Sometimes people are like oil and water that do not mix. They are immiscible in
order to get along with other people, we should learn to adapt and respect their

Concepts:
Mixtures are just as important as elements, compounds or alloys. The air that we
breathe is a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and some gases! Mixtures are used in many
processes, including steel manufacturing, the chemical industry, food and many others.
Example:
Exercise:
MIX-IT-CHEF
1. Prepare a food, herbal medicines or drinks for the family
2. Record or take pictures the step by step procedure
