Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to understand the concept of biographies having
read and watched a variety of examples. They will be able to narrow down key points with the Biography
Graphic Organizer Poster for a person of interest.
Resources/Materials List:
• Graphic organizer.
• Book: The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles (Coles, 2012)
• computers

• pencils
• Projector

Procedure:

• Write Biography on white board.


• Ask students what they know about biographies already.
• Write answers in a bubble graph model on board with answers.
• Add more information they are not getting.
- Nonfiction
- About a person's life in the form of a story
- The author is not the subject in the story.
- Autobiographies are written by the actual person being talked about.
- Information about someone's life.
• Watch Martin Luther King YouTube biography.

• Read The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles (Coles, 2012).
• Stop and go over major concepts in the story while reading it by asking questions.
• Tell the children that we are now all going to think of someone we admire that has
accomplished a lot in their life. Prompt them by saying o Sports players, scientists,
female leaders, astronauts, or presidents.
• Once each child has their person pass out the handouts Biography book study.
• Tell the children to use biography books in the reading center in the classroom and
[Link] (Inc.,2017).
• Use the class code to log in:
• Research their person for several days.
• Fill out graphic organizer poster.
• Give time for several days in class to work on this.

Javier- will work next to me if needing prompts or translations on google translator.
Jaylee- will be asked questions during the process to make sure she is comprehending what her
focus is and what she is reading.

1)Will watch videos via laptop in Spanish on biographies of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.
2)Will fill out a biography worksheet attached in Spanish.
3)Spanish books on [Link] and I will have Javier research Martin. Luther King.

Nate- Sit at a big table in the back of the classroom by himself so he can focus.

Jaylee will use a grade 1 biography rubric and or common core standards because of her reading
and comprehension levels. She will be able to find books on [Link] for her reading level grade
1.

Assessment: Students will be able to fill in their Biography Posters with accurate information from credible
sources.
What is next? Writing biographies through a three-step writing process: rough draft, revising and final draft.
Students will use an outline to construct their reports in first person. They will then use Google Docs and their
graphic organizer poster for organization and information. Students will use the given biography outline to
construct paragraph form.
