On becoming a Filipino

Jeepney, known as ‘King of the Road’ proudly represents the Filipino culture. It signifies
how creative and innovative Filipinos are even in back days, given that it is created from the
left-over vehicles of Americans and Japanese during World War II. Filipinos need to engineer
the said vehicle in order to meet the needs of everyone and that’s how it is today. The
vehicle was lengthened to accommodate more people and they add roof for protection from
heat, windows from both side to enjoy the view from outside and also in order to feel the
freshness of air because pollution is not that rampant in those days. The chairs are also
lengthened sideways creating a narrow space in the middle that serve as an aisle and it ease
the loading and unloading of passengers in the backdoor. The new interior became convenient
for every one since Filipinos are fan in mingling with one another together with their unending
stories to tell. What differs from today is some Jeepney owners attached TV’s, Radio’s,
Stereo’s and some sort of entertainments for the passengers. As for its exterior, this is
where we can portray how artistic everyone is, in different way. They say that you cannot
find Jeepneys that identical to one another and it is because of the colorful designs of its
metal shell. This is practically one of the main reason why it is known even in others countries.
Owners have the freedom to paint, color and design their jeeps. Some choose to put objects
that represent the Philippines, some paints their family, and some are personally showing and
portraying their artistic sides through designing it. This makes up the Jeepneys today.
Personally, I did not experience to ride Jeepney since I live in a place where there’s no
need to. But I’ve seen one every now and then and I can sense the difference in terms of
the feelings and comfort. First thing that will caught your eyes is the colorful and lively vibes
of it. Eventhough the passengers are like sardines inside, they are still enjoying. Most of them
know each other especially when they live in Bukid places, some can’t stop laughing due to
antique shenanigans of the driver, some are thankful because they’ve given a chance to sit
beside their crush, and what I want to experience is to ride in the roof. I remember when I
was still in high school, I envy those students that when they go home, they ride in the roof
of the jeep. Yes, you can inhale the polluted air but their smiles while conversing with other
student at the roof is priceless. That means anything in this world for a high school student
like me, the contentment for simple things with the people you want to be with.
