To a student who understands the material:

Emely, great job! I can see you completely understood the material that was taught in class.
You went above and beyond by putting your final answer into standard form. You nailed all
seven components of each question and showed all of your work. Keep up the good work!

To a student who is on the right track:

Andrea, great job on the simplification and putting your final answer into standard form. You
completed all parts of each question but had some diffifculties with understanding coefficients.
Make sure to review what the difference between a constant and coefficient is. Also, make sure
to check your work for small errors like dropping negatives.

To a student who needs help:

Colleen, great work on identifying the coefficients, and leading coefficient. You have some small
errors in the question 2’s simplification component, make sure to combine like terms. Because
of this mistake, some of your other answers are incorrect, be sure to double check your work.
You are also missing the degree component on each question. Be sure to look out for negatives
because this can change your whole answer. I am available to talk about your homework and
give you more problems if you feel you need more help. It would be beneficial to review the
examples in the powerpoint from class and see where you went wrong.

Explanation
Five out of the eleven students have a strong understanding of the material and one is on the
way of understanding it. The remaining five students have missed the mark on this assignment,
in many cases this is due to small mistakes that will affect answers. Regarding each individual

grading component, the results vary. Every student has a good understanding of simplifying
expressions. Students are having the most issues with identifying the degree and coefficients of
the expressions. Many students are writing every degree instead of the highest degree. Many
students are also missing the mark of what the difference between a constant and coeffient is,
students are writing that the constant is a coefficient when it is not. The errors in the other
components are mainly small errors like dropping negatives, this is not something I would
consider an error with the overall content, but an error when checking work.

Next Steps
While identifying the coefficients and degree of an expression, I feel we can practice this this by
identifying the components of more challenging and advanced problems to come. While still
continuing on to the new topics we can incorparate the topics learned in this lesson. Instead of
just having students identify the properties in the next lesson I will also have students identify
the coefficients, degree, leading coefficient, terms, and constant to ensure that students grasp
this topic without falling behind or forgetting about it.
