Distinctive Elements of the 20th Century Music
Background Information for Learners
The 20th century saw dramatic innovations in musical forms and styles. It was clearly
a period of widespread experimentation and many composers wanted the freedom to explore
new compositional approaches without the restrictions and expectations that accompany
traditional genres. Even when longstanding genres were used, composers felt very comfortable
abandoning the traditional structures of those genres.
The start of the 20th century saw the rise of distinct styles that reflected a move away
from the conventions of earlier Western classical music. These new styles were:
impressionism, expressionism, primitivism, neo-classicism, avant-garde music and modern
nationalism. Aside from these, new musical styles arose such as electronic music and chance
music.
This Learning Activity Sheet aims to describe the distinct elements of given pieces that
developed in the 20th century.
