Exploring Jupiter's Moon Callisto

The student chose to make their PowerPoint presentation about Jupiter's moon Callisto. They found Callisto to be the most interesting topic because it is the oldest and most cratered object in the solar system. Researching Callisto changed the student's assumptions about moons, as they previously thought all moons would be similar to Earth's moon. However, moons like Io and Callisto are very different from Earth's moon. Through this assignment, the student learned many details about Callisto and other moons that they were previously unaware of, such as their geological activity and formation processes. They now have a better understanding of the diversity of objects within the solar system.

PowerPoint Reflection

For this assignment we were asked to make a PowerPoint presentation about any topic
that we have learned in astronomy. At first it was really hard for me to decide on one specific
thing to focus on. Some ideas I had for topics were pulsar stars, moons, constellations, black
holes, and a few more. Ultimately it came down to what interested me the most and also what
topic I could confidently present about. In the end I chose to make my PowerPoint presentation
about Jupiter's moon Callisto. Deciding on one specific moon out of the 200 moons in our solar
system was hard. I knew Jupiter had quite a bit of moons so I chose that, kind of just on a whim
really. When researching Jupiter’s moons Io was really fascinating but so was Callisto. The fact
of Callisto being the oldest and most cratered object in our entire solar system really won me
over. This showed me how unique Callisto was and got me excited to learn more about it
throughout doing this assignment.

Researching and learning more about Callisto really made me rethink all my assumptions
I had made about moons in our solar system. I honestly didn’t even know Callisto was one of the
moons that made up the solar system. There are so many moons out there and I really only know
a small handful of them. The earth’s moon is of course the one I’m most familiar with. Not only
did I learn more about moons by this assignment but also through taking this class. An
assumption I had going into this project was that every moon would be similar to the Earth’s
moon. That is not the case. Take Io, another moon of Jupiters’, as an example of being the most
geologically active moon in our solar system. That is very different from our moon, which is not
geologically active much like Callisto. Callisto on the one hand is the oldest and most cratered
object in our solar system. That is so impressive and I would never think that a moon could hold
that big of a title. Callisto also has the lowest density and gravity out of the four Galilean moons
which shows how unique it really is. The biggest assumption I made about our Solar System is
that most moons and abjects, besides planets, are pretty much the same. This is so wrong.
Everything in our solar system is distinctive in their own way.

This assignment gives you an idea about all the things that I learned by taking this
Astronomy class. Not only did my presentation have to do with a moon but it was about
explaining all the intricate details of it that make it special. Those details ranged from describing
its orbit around Jupiter to how Callisto might be a place in our solar system where life could
form. Before taking this class I wouldn’t have been able to understand half of the details about
Callisto. I know what it means for an object to be tidally locked to another. Now I know the
process of accretion some moons like Callisto go through to form. I now know how you can tell
if a moon or object in our solar system is geologically active or not. These are just a few
examples of the things I learned from not only taking this class, but also through completing this
assignment.
