Rediscovering My Passion for Writing

Final Reflection

In early September, at the beginning of the course, we had an assigned literacy narrative

essay. For this essay, I wrote a story about an experience in elementary school that had a

substantial impact on my confidence in writing. In the conclusion, I stated that I hoped I would

again find that passion for writing I once had. As the semester progressed and more essays were

assigned, I can proudly say, ​I did.

I hadn’t written an essay-or put any effort into an essay-for around two years before this

class. I was completely out of touch with my writing. However, with this class, our learning, our

prompts, and our freedom to choose what topics to write about, I soon found myself passionately

throwing myself into my writing, once again. For once, the topics were something I ​wanted​ to

write about, things I had a strong opinion on.

With our assigned reading from ​The Bedford Guide for College Writers​ I learned how to

organize and properly revise and edit an essay. I put our learning to use in all of my essays and

effectively came out with strong essays. Another book we were assigned passages from,​ The

Moth Presents Occasional Magic, ​inspired me to to put ​myself​ into my work; to add humor and

personalization that draws in the reader, while making the writing process much more rewarding.

In this class we were assigned base groups from early on. These base groups consisted of

four peers who would review every draft we came out with and inform us of what we need to

work on while also pointing out our strengths. Reading reviews from my peers helped me find

insight and effectively revise my writing, while further boosting my confidence in my abilities.

Leaving reviews for other students helped me learn how to analyze an essay and scope out strong

points and weaknesses in writing, skills which I could then reflect onto my own work.

We learned how to develop our ideas into essays by planning and organizing an essay

beforehand. With this tool, we were able to find effective arguments and organize them into the

best order possible while also connecting one point into another.

In the course I found success with argumentative writing. I found that writing a strong

opinion on an issue and providing evidence and debunking counter arguments was something

I’m not only passionate about but, in my opinion, good at. We learned how to picture our ideal

audience and find the purpose in our writing so that we could get our point across as efficiently

as possible. Singling out our audience allows us to effectively impact the readers and hopefully

get them to understand and maybe even agree with our points.

This semester I learned many things about the writing process and found myself diving

into my writing and being truly proud of myself to the point where I was sending my essays to

friends and family to show off my work. I came back in touch with a passion I lost long ago and

it was one of the best education related experiences I’ve had in a long time. I will always be

grateful for this class, our learning, our freedom of writing, and our effective input, all which

allowed me to become a writer I'm proud to be.
