Project Management - Project 3

Before MYH can produce a product described in Project 2. It has to prototype and prove the product
before mass production. Recall that MYH is a Fortune 500 company that produces a variety of
personal health care products such as glucose meters, blood pressure monitor, oximeter, etc.

The automatic data collection device (such as Fitbit or Apple wrist watch) will have the following
product requirements:
1. This product will help as an automatic badge to identify the employee
2. It will be used for allowing entry into Gym facilities
3. It will be used to identify employee location while within the office or Gym It should NOT be
able to track employee location outside these places
4. It will be water proof to a depth of 10 meters for use in the swimming pool
5. It should withstand temperatures of -40F to 140F.
6. Record heart rate (beats per minute) continuously 7 x 24
7. Record the number of steps, distance, and time walked
8. Record the distance and time ran
9. Record the time the employee is not moving
10. Record the number of stairs climbed
11. Record the time, distance, and time the employee cycled
12. Record the time the employee worked out
13. Record the calories burnt over time
14. Allow the employee to check weight on a machine in the Gym that can record the weight
automatically in the device
15. Allow the employee to check blood pressure on a machine in the Gym that can record BP
automatically in the device
16. Allow the employee to create his/her profile in a smart phone and pair the device to upload
the data to phone and the intranet.
17. Data on the intranet will be encrypted and not identified by employee name. These data
will be processed and only statistics will be available to the management.
18. Record the amount of time an employee sleeps while diagnosing awake time, REM time,
Light sleep time, and deep sleep time.
19. Record mindfulness while meditating
20. Provide free games such as Angry Birds, Scrabble, and Word Games in Smart Phone app.
21. Provide brain games to improve concentration and memory
22. Make the app available on Android and Apple OS for Smartphones and Windows PC and
Apple Computer. All pairable by Bluetooth.
23. Use existing manufacturing facilities to produce the product
24. The life would be 3 years. A new model will be initiated in 2 years based on experience with
this product.
25. A system is needed to record issues, problems, glitches, customer suggestions, performance
etc. The customer support will collect these as a part of the Intranet system
26. There will also be a customer forum for discussion of the above that will be used in
conjunction with the above.
27. The production cost of the device needs to be low and not exceed $30 per watch. This watch
can be sold to other gyms and fitness centers and general public at prices competitive in the
market. (a spin off that will bring extra revenue to the firm)
28. The top management believes that it needs to get the product quickly, and therefore, the
prototype has be approved in less than 6 months.

Define a list of activities (35 to 50 activities), the type of resources required for each activity, and
the activity sequence to produce and prove the prototype. Developing the prototype will include

design, identification of materials, components, make or buy these, vendor identification or


development if need to buy, production facilities, machines, production processes, tooling, and
worker skills needed, and quality plan. This will be later refined to produce a detailed WBS and
prototype project management plan.
