Understanding Route Collection in Vibration Data

Route collection is a vibration data collection mode used for machine condition monitoring. A route defines multiple machine measurement points and parameters and is created in EDM software. The route is uploaded to a data collector which technicians then use to efficiently collect vibration data from machines in the field according to the predefined route. The collected data is later downloaded back to EDM for analysis and reporting.

What is Route Collection?

 Route collection is a specialized vibration data collection mode. This interface designed for
condition monitoring of machine.
 Route collection includes route setup and measurement tools, standard vibration measurement
parameters such as RMS, true-RMS, overall-RMS, peak and also waveform, spectrum and
demodulation measurements.
 Data collector receives one or more routes from PC, which is an index file pointing to multiple
pre-defined machine points and measurement parameters.
 Routes are setup or prepared with EDM software, then uploaded to the analyser.
 A typical scenario of vibration data collection includes,
i. In EDM, the vibration analysts define a set number of measurement points under a set
number of machines.
ii. Under each measurement point, they will define a number of measurement entries,
each have analysis vibration parameters.
iii. With this machine preset points route is created. A route is a sequence list that contains
measuring points in the order in which they will be collected.
iv. This route is uploaded to device from PC through cable.
v. Technician takes the device and walks through plant, collects the data at machine points
according to route.
vi. This device is then brought back to office and downloaded to EDM. Finally using EDM
the user is able to display the data signatures and generates trending, exception or
alarm reports.
